The future of Bernie Ecclestone in Formula One has been thrown into doubt after the sport's chief executive and commercial rights holder was charged with bribing a German banker.

Will F1 be better off without Bernie?

Personally I would like to see the back of him and his meddling in the financial affairs of F1. Sure he orchestrated the rise of Formula One as a popular sport and made sure that the teams (including his own Brabham team) got a fair cut of the revenue during the FISA/FOCA war of the early '80s, but he is and always will be ONLY interested in adding ever more increasing amounts to his already huge personal fortune whilst the vast majority of the teams struggle financially - ironic really when you consider that he was fighting AGAINST the very same thing in the '80s and now he is guilty of the same practice of denying the teams what they are entitled to - without the teams, Bernie doesn't have a show to sell!!

He is nothing but a money man, pure and simple and after getting rid of that other self important, power crazy meddler in the affairs of F1 - Max Mosley - the job will be complete and F1 will once again be about racing NOT corporate gains when Ecclestone is watching races on his portable TV in a prison cell? The guy is accused of throwing his money around (yet again) to facilitate his own financial gain and in a way which is clearly against the law? How much money does he need for heavens sake?

Personally, I think (and hope) that he will be found guilty!!

This showdown might persuade him bow out sooner rather than later.

Worth an estimated £4bn, does he really need all the hassle that F1 brings, aged 83?

Hi Kev, i couldn't agree more.I never really liked Bernie.I always had the feeling that he was only in it for the money. In fact about a week ago before this story broke i was thinking "I don't trust this guy & i never have". For me it started when ITV paid him millions for the rights & they complained that they weren't getting enough in car footage & Bernie said "If you want it your going to have to pay for it". What a creep. I love the in car footage but he didn't care about the fans only the money. I'm not sure how they can force him out as he owns the sport but if they do hopefully we'll get someone that loves the sport & doesn't just see it as a cash cow.Mad

Unfortunatly this is a prime case of "better the devil you know"

Who are we going to end up with in charge of F1?
A die hard motor racing fan who has all the best interests of the sport at heart, or a rich russian / oil baron arab with the money to take over?

We all know the latter is more likely as we can't imagine Bernie handing the keys over to someone like us!

Maybe Tamara is being primed up to take over LOL
