NMBROOK wrote:Ah ha you did read it I would go with what you said,in that if you do cover with walnut, you leave your options open. You can make your mind up later, then you have the option to leave the area under the beak in natural wood if you so desire. You can always clad those little bulkheads with walnut,or remake them out of 4mm walnut sheet. Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel, would like to clad the whole thing including the small bulkheads but the concern was changing the thickness of the prow and bulkheads from 4mm up to 6mm as I haven't found walnut sheet any thinner than 1mm.... .. Have also been toying with the idea of actually planking with .6mm plank above the prow waterline (when my supplies arrive) and staining the bulkheads walnut..... .. Looks like plenty of options to choose from.... can also paint black if I have to..... .. Thanks again for the advice.... Best regards Alan

Admiral Anti Spiral wrote:wow lovely work alan, coming along great, i may have to copy you on that 1mm sheet although in maple , keep up the good work Thanks for the very kind comment Admiral, always appreciate your support.... Decided to clad with walnut sheet as I really didn't fancy simply staining the keel pieces, to me it just wouldn't look right.... .. Go for it in maple, I'm sure you will love it too... Best regards Alan

Best regards Alan There would not be any knock on issues with them being 6mm,just remember your slots will want adjusting, but the forward slot would want widening all at the rear to maintain the front edge position.Incidentally you can get the thinner walnut from original marquetry. Kind Regards Nigel

Thanks Nigel, I have enough walnut sheet to clad the whole thing and for this build I am simply going to clad in one piece..more because I am unsure of the pattern that would be used. Have to admit though, I had thought about the slots and apart from the last one I can keep them as they are and recess the walnut by 1mm to compensate... hadn't thought about the position of the smallest bulkhead so thanks again for the heads up on that one.... .. Plenty to do before I can start on issue 40.... Regards Alan

No worries,I'm glad to help, like I say keeping the same position of the front face of the smallest bulkhead is important for the side panels. Kind Regards Nigel

court orchard wrote:Lovely work Alan. I know what you mean about the 2nd Planking, seems to take forever, I'm just beginning the second side. But worth taking time over, if you want it to look good. It's so easy to rush it and then suffer having to look at it for evermore, with regret that you didn't give it enough care. Andy, huge apology for missing your post and not replying.... .. Have to agree with you, if you want it to look good then you have to take your time with it and if it's not right then do it again.... .. Having seen the standard of your work though I know for sure your planking will look spot on.... .. Once again, apologies for not replying.... Best regards Alan

Had to have a little time out from the build due to other things that cropped up... .. Now got back to it and started by gluing the stern post in place, very pleased with the results... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Got down to the business of starting to clad the prow and keel... First thing was to draw round the prow piece on 1mm sheet walnut, cut two pieces out roughly using the unimat... Marked out where the extension of the ribs slots would be, this area will be free of the walnut cladding, this way I have very little alterations to make to the ribs themselves.... Now that my wood supplies arrived, I laid a strip of 5mm walnut along the bottom edge of the prow... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Next job was to glue and clamp one side of the prow with the roughly cut walnut cutout... when dry, I then removed the walnut from where the ribs will locate... Widened the top of the first rib slot to ensure the rib including its cladding will finish in the correct position to accommodate the side panels.. Moved onto to cladding each side of the rib pieces, glued and clamped the cladding in place and waited for it to dry.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finally for now, I dry fitted the first two ribs and then dry fitted the prow to the bow.... .. Very happy with how its going at the moment and will be continuing with this tomorrow evening..... Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
