Hi lads. I have been looking through some diaries and I have a question on the finish of the lower hull. I have almost finished planking and then comes the sanding. When everything is smooth and looking well what is the next stage. How do you get the definitive lines of the planks on the hull. When mine like in most diaries are sanded down the planks kind of all run into each other yet on the diaries the planks appear to have been outlined. Have i done something wrong here or is when you varnish the hull these outlines appear ?

Hi neon I am afraid to say the lines between the planks on the second planking has been created with either using a black marker or pencil to colour the plank edges before fitting.This was never part of the instructions and is something that alot of builders,myself included,chose to do to replicate the tar'caulking'between planks.If you have fitted the second planking then it is to late to carry this out.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hi nmbrook. Thanks for your reply. Your build is out of this world I have been watching with interest. Is there secondry planking on the lower hull or is just the top. I have not done any secondry planking yet just the first layer so maybe i can still learn this skill.any help would be appreciated.

Hi Neon, if you haven't done any secondary planking on the lower hull then you can still carry out the advice Nigel gave with regards to caulking between the planks.... My method was to lightly run a permanent black marker down one edge of the plank. It has to be lightly to try to minimise the amount of bleed into the wood... The additional thing I did to help prevent the bleed was to very lightly sand the edge to be caulked....  Hope this helps and hope to see some pics of your build.... Regards Alan

Firstly thank you very much indeed neon .If you haven't started the second planking then not a problem.All of the hull is covered in second planking including the bottom which is covered in limewood and is nearly the same colour as the bamboo which is why you may have thought it wasn't covered.It is a simple process when you get to that stage and there are a few excellent build logs that describe what to do.Mine doesn't as I started it after planking. Cheers Nigel....Well thats a relief. This is my first build and so far i am quite impressed with the way its all going.I am doing my very best to make sure everything is a smooth as possible before tackling the second planking. The job you have done is quite simply amazing. I could never expect to get a finish quite like that but I am going to try hard to maybe do what you have done by outling planks and tree nailing. I just love the timber finish instead of the white. I will check out some of the builds that you suggested but I hope when I am ready to start that I can pop back on here and you can give me some advise,,,,cheers mate

SOTS Bottom section When I started the build of the SOTS, I had to tweak the rib-slots to level out the deck.  I am to plank the hull now, only to found the waves of the deck been tweaked, has moved down the hull to ribs #13; 15; 16; 20. The deepest gap (+- 1mm) is at #15 where the two planks joins in the middel of the rib.   If I follow the false keel's line, all the bottom planks immediately next to the keel should be in a straight line from #7 up to #21.  I enclosed a photo of my dillema. Please help me to rectify if it needs to be tweak. Any info regarding this matter is highly appreciated. I would glue some stripwood to the low areas and when thoroughly dry fair the strips to remove the dips.

hi there. the bulkheads do need to constant i.e. all the same in the middle section of the false keel. if you used pva or aliphatic glue removal will be easy of the affected bulkheads, just use a paint brush and warm water to soften the glue,then adjuste slot in the bulkheads to rectify. I recommend you do it this way, otherwise the decks won't sit properly.
