Tonight I finished all the work on issue 41, that is fitting the box section to the underside of the stern gallery and the three small framing pieces under the side galleries... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Started work on issue 42. Sanded and prepared the bow to take the bow deck... removed the bow deck from the fret and gently sanded the edges to remove the ash.. .. Test fitted the bow deck and further sanded the edges to get a nice fit. Glued the bow deck in place ensuring the bow spirit dowel was in situ... Took the bow bulkhead lower frame, sanded the edges and also using a half round file grooved the underside to ensure the bow spirit dowel would slide in without interference. With the lower framing in place I traced round it and removed it and the dowel... .. Instructions called for staining the bow deck to mimic the sapele so once again decided to use the real thing and planked it.. This added .5mm height but don't see that causing too many problems.... ... Will continue tomorrow planking the forward bulkhead and here I intend to deviate slightly from the official build.... Happy building all Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Lovely work Alan I bet you are enjoying yourself with some proper construction as opposed to treenailing and gunport lining. Out of interest,my reference material suggests they were glazed and they opened in two halves vertically.I originally went for 1mm mesh as this was very close to scale size of the leaded windows in Temple Newsam house which is late 16th century and still has the original windows. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel and yes, it is great getting on with some varied construction work and looking forward to planking the forward bulkhead.... .. My thinking on this and looking at the Italian forum is to extend the planking to another 16mm above the top support, this would result in not having an unsightly deck line showing. It also means I would have to remove the front 2mm from the deck to compensate for the thickness of the planks. I intend to plank the bulkhead in walnut and not use the bamboo mainly as the walnut has nice straight edges and not rounded as with the bamboo... Walnut will be stained further to really darken it down but will still be able to see the grain.... .. Thanks also for the heads up on the windows, will also play around a little using Krystal Kleer to see how it would turn out if I was to apply it to the fine mesh... Thanks again for the nice comments and your continued support, really is appreciated... Regards Alan Alan

Been a funny day today with some of my efforts being a success whilst others not so good... .. Made attempts at darkening down the walnut keel to get a closer match to the hull.... Settled on using a medium oak as it was the closest I could get..... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finished applying the planks under the starboard gallery, sanded down and masked off ready for painting tomorrow..... am pleased with how it looks so far.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Planked the bow bulkhead using 2mm thick walnut but first darkened down the walnut using a walnut stain... I liked the look of it as it allowed the grain of the wood to show through.... .. I really didn't fancy the idea of a deck line running across the front bulkhead so added an additional 18mm to the plank height realising this would mean I would have to remove the front 2mm from the deck... .. Once finished I took a long look at the results and quite frankly didn't like it..... .. Think the walnut just looks out of place so tomorrow it is going to be painted black..... Ah well, we learn by our mistakes..... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finished off todays session by applying sapele planking to the forward section of the prow framing, didn't see the point of staining to look like sapele.... ... also lined the holes with .5mm basswood ready for the 1mm gratings.... happy with the results so the day ended on a positive note.... Don't think it's a big issue regarding the side bullworks so can live with it, not so the bow bulkhead..... .. Today was good, just a shame the walnut staining didn't turn out as I had hoped, just goes to show you never know how something turns out until you actually try it.... .. Black paint to the rescue..... Regards Alan
