Hi everyone, I am new to model shipbuilding and I have a problem understanding the build instructions and I hope all you experienced model makers will be able to help me with.
I bought the Billing Boats HMS Victory to build for my retirement.
I have completed the frame and installed the decks but then the build instructions get foggy in my mind. They say 'Starting at the upper edge of the deck proceed planking the hull downwards to the keel. Then start planking the hull from the deck upwards'. However, the build instruction clearly shows the planking strips (174,177,178 & 179 of fig.7)fitted in place four pages before any planking (1.8 x 7mm)is fitted. If this is correct should I fit the planking strips on top of the pieces 174 to 179 and if so how will I find the holes and squares made for the cannon?
I do hope some one will be able to help as I am totally unsure of what to do and don't want to ruin the model through ignorance.

Hi Ally It's difficult to visualise the instructions without seeing them in black and white so to speak. If I understand you correctly, the planks you have mentioned, 174, 177-179 are actual full length hull planks which are fixed to the ribs? First question would be 'are those planks the same thickness as the rest of the hull planks or are they thicker?' If they are the same thickness then you shouldn't plank over them. If however they are quite a bit thicker it may be that they are in fact the 'wales' (strengthening horizontal planks). Fitting them in first is unusual to say the least but if that is the case you would have to plank UP to them but again, not over the top! I think the easiest way would be to ignore those planks completely, start your planking at the main deck level and work down as the instructions say, this is the most common method of planking and any problems can be rectified once the main planking is finished. Sorry I can't be more specific but I've never built a Billing before so I don't know what sequence their instructions follow! If possible try and photo the instruction plans and post them here, we might be able to give more advice once we can see them. Best of Luck with her. Hi Robin, thanks for answering my query some promptly.
If I manage to do it correctly I have sent you the Build instructions for the model. I hope this will help.
Fig 7 of the build shows the 8 pieces of what they call 'planking strips', nos. 174, 177,178 & 179 (two of each).
These are 1mm thick and are shown fixed to the ribs or frames.
When you look at Fig 9 however, they show 'Planking' 1.8 mm thick by
7 mm wide.
I hope this shows my dilemma, if I fix the 1.8 x 7 mm strips on top of the 'planking strips' then I shall lose the positions of the cannons etc. but I can not fix the 1.8 mm planking first and the 1mm planking strips on top.
Sorry if this is confusing but I am doing my best to explain.

Hi again Ally. If you have the plans saved as a jpeg try 'post reply' as you have done already and click the box at the bottom "Attach files to this post?" followed by the blue POST button. This should bring up the menu at the top where you can browse to and select the jpeg by name. Click Upload and then Back and your pic should then appear on the diary page. If it still won't come up let me know on the diary or PM me from my own diary and I'll try some other ways! Hi Robin, thanks again for coming to the rescue. I think my scan and edit expertise will be drastically improved by now if nothing else.
