I've finished the stern today, after a few hicups!Angry

Some of the initial planks were not glued in flush and when dry fitting there were too many crooked joints. Decided to steam the planks loose and refit them! Fitted all planks together and is happy with the end result!BigGrin

Happy building!LOL LOL LOL

Looks as if it has all fitted together nicely Kobus, well done... Next step is to attach it to the hull which with care is a fairly straight forward process.... Cool Cool

Hi Kobus, looking good, take your time and check everything you do and you will do fine.
I was just reading your diary and I think we in SA all have the same problem with the finding of solid woods, poarticularly in small sizes, I have started collecting veneeer rolls of the various woods I would like to use. Easily obtainable in long lengths and varying thickness and reasonably easy to use with patience. Even managed to source thin sheets that are used as samples by the kitchen and bic manufacturing trade.Just a thought.

Another update for the day.

Painted the launch with a wood primer. Tested the Humbrol RC417, ivory white, but it seems green?Confused

The stick on the right is painted white.

I saw the painted version of the Victory. That put me off the route of using paint. I am using wood stain for a natural look. The painted version looks like a toy from the toys shop. For this built with its second layer, I prefer the varnished look

Hi Marcel

I'm painting te launch, but going for a maple plank finish on the bottom. That is to say if I can find maple in the size required!Confused . I'm contemplating in buying maple and cut it to the require size myself! Currently looking out for a table saw that will do the job.

Enjoy your build!

Blink Kobus,Look at the pic to give you an idea.
I use the Home brand from Builders Warehouse at home for cabinet making. Since I do not have a table saw, the Router comes in handy to cut/trim planks with the suitable straight router bit. Cool

Hi Marcel

Thanks for the info. Have seen the Proxxon table saw and other machines available, but they are very expensive! Cursing

I've found a timber supplier in Pretoria where I can buy maple planks, 25 x 200 x 3000. I just need a saw to split it in a smaller size. I've got a router which I can use to 'plane' the panks with.

I want to use the maple as Nigel did with his model, it looks fantastic!Drool

I was fortunate to visit Mdel Ships when visiting Mosselbay. They do 4 metre long boats and do an amazing job. The owner let me browse through his workshop. It was a first for me to view such craft in live.

Kobus, contact them to solve our problem of exotic wood supplies.
