Ok, so now we make a start on issue 44. First thing I did was to dry fit all of the deck sections and to have a close look at how it all sat...BigGrin Very first thing I noticed was the main deck gun ports on the port side was fine however the ports on the starboard side were sitting a little low for my liking and this needed to be tackled or it would constantly annoy me Blushing Blushing .. As the pic shows, there isn't a lot of room there for the deck planking plus the walnut edging to fit under the ports... Blushing Blushing

So now I had some decisions to make in order to put the ports right... I could move the ports but that would mean moving all of the top row of ports to ensure I retained the balanced flow line... this would be a lot of work and could cause damage along the way... ruled this option out... Blink Blink .. I could leave things as they are but it would niggle me so that is just not acceptable to me either...Blink Blink .. The only option left was to lower the deck on the starboard side, this would need to be done by about 2mm and it is not something I think would be noticeable, this is the option I have chosen.. Cool Cool Having decided to lower the deck I had to also ensure I did not alter the heights of the forecastle or quarterdecks.. I cut out the framing for the bulkheads, dry fitted with sections of the deck planking I will be using placed underneath, once happy I marked off the heights of the forecastle and quarterdeck...

Next stage was to remove the decking and to cut and dry fit the deck supports... ensured all of the supports were a snug fit and also took the time to number them.... Blink Blink Using a new blade I then trimmed down the ears on the ribs by the required 2mm, did this very carefully taking small slivers of wood off at a time... When down to the correct height I then filed down the deck support by the same amount and again test fitted.... Cool Cool

Continued to do the same with all the ribs along the centre section.. I also realise this method means I will have weakened the deck supports so to compensate I intend to add additional supports underneath. This will not be noticed when its complete.. Finally, did a dry fit of the decks again and was a lot happier with the results... Cool Cool .. I appreciate there are many ways to deal with this common problem but hopefully by outlining my method it will be of help to others behind me who may find they have a similar problem.... will continue with the fix tomorrow and post the results..

Happy building all...

Regards

Alan

Thanks Andy, happy to say so far it is working out for me... Huge lesson learnt here, once you start cutting ports then always double check the heights in relation to the deck level on the upperdecks... Won't make that mistake again I can tell you..... Thanks again for looking in.... Cool Cool

Alan

Thanks for the positive endorsement Nigel, heart in mouth for a while as I just wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, not that its finished yet, still have more to do but just knew I couldn't leave it as it was....Cool Cool .. And yes, that decking was done some time ago before the planking even started, it was done as a practice having never done it before... I'm pleased with it but shame you won't see it but hey ho!!!... To think issue 50 is just out in the newsagents and I am on issue 44, we are not yet even half way through.... long way to go yet eh.... Cool Cool Thanks again....Cool Cool
