As I started with the planking I 'struggled' with the bending of the bamboo as all the angles of my form is not perpendicular to the clamping angle the clamps tend to slide off.  I decided to build my own plank bender. I used a piece of gelotong and cut the same form out as my previous form. With two 8 x 125 mm bolts I force the two shapes together with the bamboo in the middle and there is no slipping of clamps!   Regards Kobus

I find that the steam of a kettle softens the bamboo enough to let me shape it. I pre pin the plank, steam it and pin it in place to dry. If you do 3 rows at a time, the top and bottom plank guides the plank when glueing. "Rather try and fail than had failed to try".Sovereign of the Seas Model Space forum: Marcel's build

When steaming on the boat near other glued pieces there is a risk of the other glue softning and coming loose. Regards Kobus

Nice work Kobus I bet it feels good to start on the planking.I like your former for bending the planks do you soak/steam them and leave them in there to dry? Kind Regards Nigel

Once dried I take it out and the bamboo stays in the form with a bit of relaxing. I've steamed the first six planks all at once and dried them in the former together. It worked well. Regards Kobus

 Hi Kobus, good to see you are on the planks. It starts to take shape. It might look like nothing, but I know its a lot of work up to this stage. The waiting is the tough part when you have time to continue with the build, but has to waste on preparation.  Any plans on how to go about those twists at the rear?  I guess it would look like a brace from intensive care unit Keep them posting Marcel "Rather try and fail than had failed to try".Sovereign of the Seas Model Space forum: Marcel's build

Hi Kobus, its coming along very nicely.... The bending and twisting of the bamboo will get easier as you find your own methods... Me, I simply used steam from the kettle, holding the bamboo over the kettle spout and bending as I went... Worked well for the bamboo but for the bending of harder woods I have placed strips in a pressure cooker, that made the strips nice a pliable when I took them out.... .. Regards Alan

I've seen a posting on the forum showing the twisting of the planks, will most probably start with it that way and see where it takes me, maybe to ICU! Regards Kobus

I have an issue with the dip at frame 26. Many builders has packed it. If you have not done it, I suggest you do it now while you are in the early stages. Look in the Hull Profile for discussion about it. In my diary is also pics to describe the dip. Its a pleasure to be of some assistance.   I also had to remove the planks to pack it. I used the tip from Karl and used hot water with a brush to softened the glue; worked like a charm. At first I thought the resin glue would be a pain in the rear. I am working currently on the stern to get a smooth natural flow of the planks. Nigel's build just did that for me.  I do not like the flatness of the Gallery. Since Karl is busy with the decor of his Gallery, I am getting a good idea what to expect from the finished look.
