Short update, at long last I have finally finished laying the deck planking.... also took the opportunity to remove the ears on the central deck section so I was able to plank straight over to the edge of the bullworks... .. The slow part of this process was not the laying of the planks but more to do with preparation, especially as each plank was cut, sanded smooth including the edges followed by give each 3 coats of stain... Could also say I was being fussy with the planks I was choosing to apply to the deck trying to make sure I kept a used like look.... very pleased with how it turned out and the pics do not do it justice... .. Tomorrow its down to cutting the mast holes, trimming the hatchways and make a start on the treenailing... Will post more pics then.... Happy building all,,,, Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

The deck looks the 'muts nuts'(didn't want to be in bother using the other version )Alan.Very, very impressive, well worth the time and effort .I presume you will be using 1mm gratings. Before doing any additional work around the hatches,I would be tempted to suss out your grating layout to suit the different gratings. It may be a case of enlarging the holes slightly to work with the different gratings so you don't end up with half a hole scenario. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Hi Nigel and thanks for the very supportive comments, most appreciated... .. You are correct of course, I fully intend to change the gratings to 1mm and got a feeling each hatch will take at least 3 grating kits... .. You have now given me food for thought, so much so I'm not going to trim the hatches yet, not until the gratings are ready to fit... .. Got a thought in my head to actually make up the gratings and actually fit the gratings to the grating surrounds first and when happy then fit to cover the hatch holes.... .. Will have a think and a look at that idea..... Thanks again for the heads up on that one..... Regards Alan

Started this evening by cutting out the mast holes on the decking, hatches are being left until I come to do the gratings... .. Made a start on treenailing the deck. .. first thing I did was to drill the treenail holes using the trusty Dremel and a .35mm drill, ensured the drill went through the deck ply underneath the decking strips... Using .3mm monofilament fishing line, coated the end with some PVA and used tweezers to push the line into the drilled hole ensuring it went through the decking strips and the ply underneath... ;.. Before the glue had a chance to get hold snipped the line as close to the deck as possible. Finally using a damp cloth pushed the line flush with the deck and removed any excess glue.... Happy with how it looks and it doesn't look over scaled....don't think the pics show it too well... Will carry on with it tomorrow but may be into the weekend before its finished.... Happy building all Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Very nice work Alan I am wary of using fishing ling for treenails because it doesn't sand well, but your technique gets around that. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel, I was aware fishing line doesn't sand too well so would only really use it where I know you can drill and pass it all the way through.. Wouldn't use it anywhere else apart from decking..... Regards Alan

Started work on fitting the forecastle and quarterdeck. First thing to do was to remove the front 2mm of the forecastle deck to compensate for the bulkhead planking, did a dry fit and see I have a little little more to do but almost there.... Gandale attached the following image(s):
