This question was in my diary but may have run off the radar.

On the mizzen mast the octagon at the bottom of the topmast is 5.5mm. Now this presumably fits into the fighting top which is nearly 7mm on the plans and the maximum diameter of the mast is only 6mm.

Have I done something wrong here? I know there will be a pin to hold it in position and stop it falling through but the Main and fore mast fitted snugly. I fear though, it may be too late to correct it.

Many thanks

John

Ensure the pin is of adequate length, and you can if you wish, line the inside of the mast top beams with thin strips to provide a more snug fit.

Many thanks as ever Tom.

Yes is will line it since it won't require much and I would prefer it to fit snugly.

Still curious as to what I do wrong though and I don't want to repeat it somewhere else. Did anyone else else make this mistake?

Any thoughts from those past this point would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi John,
I never made the same mistake, but it could be that you confused the measurements. What I did which might help is to gradually reduce the octagon till it is a tight fit. I did this for each and every place I needed a good fit. I cannot agree with you more, a loose fit could be a problem. Tom has given you a method of correcting it. Hope this helps.
I have learnt one thing with this build, read three times, measure three times, check it all again, then cut.
Rgds, Hans

Many thanks for coming back Hans and I am sure you are right about what I did but I can't see where I did it. I would like to know though, so that I don't make the same mistake again.

This is what I took for the plans, are these values wrong? What do you see on you plans? I know I have made a stupid error somewhere bit I just can see it at the moment.

Yes, thanks to Tom's suggestion I will do that, but being in the IT business it's in my blood to get to the bottom of things.

Thanks again, Hans

Not sure if this helps but I have just completed issue 79 and the mizzen top mast, i noticed the dimensions are wrong on the plans - there is also an editorial apology on the official build at issue 80 referring to wrong dimensions and suggests to actually measure the plan rather than read off the measurements.

Thanks Steve

The erratum in the build diary says -

"Editorial would like to offer its apologies for the printed dimensions errors on the Mizzen mast Plans that came with issue 77.
If you could please ignore the printed dimensions and use the plans as a direct-measuring pattern (ie, as instructed in the steps)."

The problem seems to have occurred for me when building the fighting top. The frame for the masts doesn't require measurement, you just build and fit. It is the hole for the mizzen mast that has come out at 7mm. Don't know why.

Thanks for your help and advice as ever guys.
