Thanks Martyn, we get these problems from time to time but the important thing is what we do to find the solutions... At least with yours a .5mm deviation will be easy to fix and won't be noticeable.... Cool Cool

Thanks again and regards

Well while waiting for the replacement decks to arrive I had a look to see what I would do next.. Settled on starting work on the hatch gratings and decided to make some changes here.. First thing I did was to cut away the deck support beam but left a small ear either side, filed the ears down to ensure the gratings would sit on top without ending up above deck level...Cool Cool.. This also helped to ensure the grating when being fitted wouldn't fall through the hatch hole...Cool Cool

Replaced the 2mm grating kit supplied with 1mm, took a total of 3 kits to complete one hatchway... Tried to ensure most of the joints would actually be on the underside and not visible... Cool Cool .. Once complete glued and fitted into place ensuring a snug fit...Cool Cool

Took some 1 x 3mm birchwood strips and gave them 2 coats of walnut stain, when dried cut to size to surround the gratings. Cut the corner joints at 45 degrees and test fitted, used very fine sandpaper to ensure nice joints..Cool Cool .. During the test fit thought the hatches looked large so also decided to fit a cross member again in walnut, this also hid the couple of joints in the grating strips that could be seen... Once happy everything glued in place and am really happy with the results... Cool Cool .. Will make a start on the other hatch tomorrow.... Cool Cool

Happy building all

Regards

Alan

Cracking work Alan, those 1mm Gratings look superb and the mod of the centre rib is a brilliant idea. Gratings were designed to be removed for access, so over large gratings would have been impractical to manhandle.BigGrin

You cut the skylight frames in a modern technique of 45 degrees (picture framing). Its to be overlapping if you want the authentic look.

The gratings can be ordered from shops if you want to wait.

Hi Andy, thank you for the very nice comments... Agreed, the gratings did look large when scaled up so simply decided to split into two halves.. it may not be authentic but I like the look of it... Cool Cool

Hi Marcel, appreciate your comment and know you are correct with the overlapping technique.. I'm not after true authenticity with this build, if I were then I would be following Nigels build as far as I could.... Cool Cool .. Am simply going to carry on doing the gratings as I did however, in future builds and especially the Vic I will be going all out to be authentic as far as possible...Cool Cool Thanks again for looking in.... Cool Cool

Thanks Martyn, to be honest you can't see the joints with the naked eye, can only see them with optivisors on. I see it as a minor issue that doesn't detract from the build in any way.... Cool Cool ..
