Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel, splicing the gratings is just like everything else on this build that simply requires a little thought, time and lots of patience... Eyes go a little funny though staring at 1mm holes after a while..... Regards Alan

Ok, so a short update on progress tonight.. Have made a start on fitting the forecastle and quarterdecks and looking at the instructions have decided to deviate on the order of the build... First thing I did was to draw a line down the centre of the decks and the supports. Also made discrete marks on the deck to ensure I kept everything in line, especially the lining up of the mast holes.. .. The cutting back of the bullworks on the quarterdeck is also being left till after the deck is fitted... Gandale attached the following image(s):

When happy, glued and clamped the quarterdeck bulkhead support in place and left to set.... While that was being done, moved onto fitting the dummy gun supports and as I planked the whole deck I had to cut small notches in the supports to ensure a good fit under the rib ears, again glued and clamped in place.. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finally when everything was set then did a further dry fit of the quarterdeck to ensure everything still lined up... was pleased to see it did.. .. As I lowered the decks earlier I can now see I have to add additional support under the forward bulkhead to ensure I end up with the deck at the correct level... .. Inserted dowel into the mizzen mast area and was very pleased to see I had maintained the angle to the stern, my only concern here was so far I cannot find any information as to what the actual angle of the mast should be so will have to keep hunting for that information.... .. Will continue fitting the quarterdeck tomorrow... Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Fantastic work Alan The mast angles are mentioned in Anderson's book Somewhere I remember reading it but can't remember the angles other than the foremast is actually angled forward 1 degree. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel, I did see it in Anderson's book but it left me a little confused... He doesn't talk about angles he talks about ratio's..I think... . The foremast has a slight rake forward, the main mast a slight rake towards the stern and the mizzen has a rake greater than the main mast. He doesn't give actual figures for the mizzen but does refer to a rake to aft of 1 in 20.... 1 in 20 is where I lost it.... .. Regards Alan

Kind Regards Nigel Py who????? .. 2.86 degrees I can equate to as it's simply language.... remember, I'm almost an old foggie who got excited being issued with his first pencil... slate and chalk back then...... .. Thanks again... Regards Alan

Another question about 2.86 degrees.... is that in relation to the deck or to the waterline.... deck also has a slight slope to it....

Tonight continued the process of fitting the quarterdeck and forecastle. Cut, fitted and glued the deck supports in place for the quarterdeck. When dried I carried on with sanding down the sides, down to the level of the deck supports ensuring I would have a nice flow at the edge of the quarterdeck and hull... Once happy I then trimmed down the bullwork to the edge of the forward bulkhead... Only remains for me to actually glue the quarterdeck in place, that will be done when I have finished the forecastle.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Turned my attention now to the forecastle.. Again drew a marker line down the centre of the deck and the forward bullhead supports... Dry fitted the base of the bulkhead and drew a line across the deck. ... Glued and fitted the bulkhead support and left to set ensuring it lined up with the discrete marks I applied to the deck... Dry fitted the forecastle and noticed a small problem than will need to be dealt with .. Noticed the edge of the forecastle deck is a little narrow for the span, think that the gap is just a little too wide to try holding in place with clamps and worried this method may actually crack or break the hull sides.... Will have to look to extending the deck by about 3mm in total, will get onto that tomorrow and post the progress... Happy building all Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
