This is my review of the Sultan Arab Dhow. She is a 1:60 scale replica of a typical cargo vessel that would have been seen cruising up and down the Nile. The model is 47cm long and stands 42cm high, and is full of surprises!! it can be purchased as a full kit or a 4 month partwork that gives you a downloadable magazine covering the history of these boats.

Anybody familiar wit Artesania Latina kits will recognise the format instantly. The instructions are the usual full colour step by step diagrams referencing the parts list, altho these instructions appear to be more comprehensive than usual.

The parts are very high quality and very well packed, there was no damage or even marks in this kit. there is a nice range of dark woods and a number of laser cut parts included.

With this being a cargo vessel the kit comes with a loverly selection of barrels and other items. the barrels are nicely turned and some are in dark wood which is a nice touch.

There is a variety of metal parts including some really nice brass hinges and the rudder hinges have already been formed.

Construction is plank on frame but a really nice touch and a surprise in a kit of this size and value is the double planked lower hull. the deck is busy with fittings and cargo and looks very eye catching. the sails are pre stitched and there is also a cloth roof for the deck cabin that can be furled.

The kit also comes with a really nice dark wood stand not the usual basic style this is nicely shaped to the cradle the hull and comes with a nice plaque, there is enough spare dark wood to make a nice mount for this.

overall I was surprised at the level of detail the kit delivers at this size and at this price. there is a lot of wood packed into this and some nice attention to detail. Skill level is quoted as 2 out of 5 so should be a nice kit for anybody fairly new to wooden kits, but it still delivers a lot of satisfaction for the seasoned builder.

Hi, Jase, This kit looks great - I was going to get this one but i have the corel sloup lined up next. Are you going to be building this one any time soon or do you have too much going on at the mo?

Hi Steve,

It is a cracking kit. sadly it has to go away for now as you say too much on the desk plus some articles planed for the the Forum. Hopefully somebody will oblige us. BigGrin

I may just add some construction pics to this review in the end.
