Sorry to trouble but was wondering if anyone could advise the best wood stain to match the sapele colour.

I purchased all of the new admiralty stains and thought the oak would be close enough but sadly not.

Been looking on the net and there appears to be nothing available as sapele wood stain so I guess it's closest match.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as I have just managed to "mess up" my beak platform using the oak stain.

Kind regards

Tony

Karl, Andy, Mr T

Many thanks for the advice - as ever it's much appreciated.

All is not lost as I had to get a replacement issue 40 due to the bow spit being damaged (big chunk missing). Sadly the replacement saw the bow spit snapped in half. Cannot ask for a third replacement but at least have the beak frame to re-make.

I'll have a look at some of the mahogany stains. The admiralty one I discounted as not being a very close match so will have a look at the DIY shop versions.

Many thanks again for the help and advice. On leave this week so have been trying to get on with my build. Still a few hull light colour planks to go but felt like a break from that today.

Tony

Hi Tony, the problem you are facing in trying to get a good match on the stain is the same problem I faced and the reason I decided to use Sapele strips to plank the beak framing... ended up with not a good match but an exact one.... Cool Cool

Hope this helps..

Alan

Many thanks for the additional info.

You have me thinking now Alan and I think I will have a go at planking on my "messed up" part to see what I can achieve.

I have ordered a brown and red mahogany stain from eBay so can always use one of these as a fall back option.

Many thanks again for everyone's comments -it's been very helpful

Kind regards

Tony

I too have been wondering how to treat the sapele strips. I’m in the middle of stage 35, getting ready to cut out the gunports and thinking about what comes next. The problem is that I’ve already decided to follow the colour scheme on the Boston Museum of Fine Arts draft of the Soveraigne, attrib. Peter Pett, ca. 1637, well illustrated in Hendrik Busmann, Sovereign of the Seas: Die Skulpturen des Britischen Koenigschiffes von 1637 (2002), p35 and end paper. This shows the ‘sapele’ area of the hull as a sort of darkened honey colour. What am I to do about that? I guess there’s no future in thinking about stain. The only option I can think of is to start from scratch, and cover the sapele with Dulux primer and go on from there. Has anyone a better idea? Grateful for any suggestions.

Hi there

The best stain that I have found is a blend of two Liberon Palette Wood Dye Colours. I use a 1:1 blend of Victorian Mahogany and Teak. This seems to have just the right amount of redness.

I have found application a little tricky. I always apply stain to the wood , with a cloth or pad, before any cutting and gluing and, being a water based wood dye, I apply a matt varnish to seal the colour in before any other operations. If any glue gets into the grain before staining you have had it. Even washing off the glue will leave residue that shows up as a lighter patch when stained.

I would also recommend spraying the varnish rather than brushing as the stain will mix into the varnish with brushing and can become patchy.

Of course you can't duplicate the Sapele grain but this colour is pretty good.

Regards, Frazer

Is Tomick allowed to say which brand of stain he is using?

'Ronseal quick drying woodstain' - satin teak 250ml

It has a burnt orange tint to it, its not perfect but is closest I have found without having to mix colours as has been mentioned.
