Started issue 48 by making up the cannon ball racks, a little fiddly but got there in the end... Also cut the side of the racks to an angle to take the shape of the bullworks and give a better fit... .. Not leaving the racks in their natural colour but intend to stain once they are set... Moved onto painting the bulkheads black on the forecastle and quarterdeck, first gave them a coat of undercoat... Lastly, moved onto staining 2 strips of 1x3mm basewood walnut, two coats and fitted the strips along the side of the gunports.. Tomorrow will move onto fitting and filling the cannon ball racks.... .. Heights of the bullworks and bulkheads have yet to be finalised and will do that at a later date... Happy building all.. Decided to stick to the measurements I used for the lower deck and marked lines across the deck at 47mm apart, also decided to leave my options open regarding the hatches on the higher decks, whether to have open or closed hatches therefore am going to plank the whole deck rather than just the centre section... .. Settled on using Tammy planks 1 x 4mm, each plank cut into 141mm lengths. Sanded each plank including the edges before giving 3 coats of light oak stain, each coat darkened the plank just a little... Caulked each edge with permanent marker and because it was stained first the bleed is just about non existent... Very happy with how it looks and will continue with it tomorrow.... . Will treenail when the deck is laid.... Happy building all.... Regards Alan Alan What an absolutely brilliant build you have. Could I ask please what the thickness of the 1 x 4 deck planks you used was. Kind regards Tony Happy Modelling

For the decking planks I used Tanganyka Strip 1mm thick by 4mm wide. Available from Connwall Model Boats in lengths of 1 metre.... Hope this helps.. Regards Alan

Would also like to thank you for your guidance on the query I raised over staining the beak section. Had good advice from many of the forum members but settled on your idea of using left over sapelle wood. Very happy with the end result. Many thanks again Alan for sharing your build, skills and ideas . Kind regards Tony Happy Modelling

Progress to date.... stained and fitted the cannon ball racks, much happier than leaving them in their natural colour... .. Started work on painting the stern ornamentation by removing the burrs and mould lines, giving the pieces 2 coats of primer... Moved onto trying various gold paints but on wood, finally settled on a metallic antique gold and for me is more in keeping with the period of the ship.... unfortunately, the photo's don't do the colour justice and even after several attempts could not get a photo to show the metallic effect..... Really like how it looks.... In between painting I made a start on the ships bell housing, base glued together and using a fine sanding block rounded the edges.. Finished by giving it the first coat of walnut stain.... no where near the finished product .. Happy building all.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Looking great there Alan Looking at that metallic gold effect, it might be worth trying some experiments with a dark brown or black ink wash which would give the mouldings an increased depth or 3D effect and also add to the 'age' of the look. (That didn't come out right but you know what I mean! ) Rather than try it on the actual mouldings, you could try painting some cheapy plastic soldiers (old airfix types) in the gold and try ink washing them! I normally use the Citadel acrylic inks but I've found the new Humbrol Enamel Wash to be really good, especially on metallics! Keep it up! Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Like I say, the photos really don't do the finished pieces justice but at the same time I really like your idea.... I went for the antique gold paint because the others just appeared to be a little to garish for my liking and unlike the photo shows its not as yellowish as it appears.... .. Do want to just age it a little so have now ordered some Enamel wash as you suggested and will do a little experimentation on some plastic figures I have.... Judging by what I have seen on youtube then think it will give me the appearance I really want..... .. Thanks again for the input.... Best regards Alan
