Thanks fir that idea Nigel, gives me something else to think about, I think my scroll saw blades are about the right cut size for this. Not quite on the gallery yet though, a few issues to go first so have time to decide. I have a problem with the mizzen mast crossjack yard - the yard slings on the drawings are large ones as used on the main mast and foremast lower yards but only tiny ones were supplied as shown below - the whole of the yard footprint is shown in two shades as a part of it is going over those ropes - I know I have seen someone mention this before recently but i have no idea where or who or what the outcome was, can anyone please help? stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Actually, looking at the official build for issue 80 they seem to be small yard slings there too, i think the plan is drawn wrong. Steve

A few more bits done, I sorted the yard slings problem out in the end and discovered that the parts supplied were ok as was the official build, it was the the plan that was wrong, there are a couple of errors on the mizzen mast plans. Firstly, I have now completed the mizzen mast, yards and booms - in fact all masts and yards are done - Just the bowsprit to do but thats not for a while yet. stevie_o attached the following image(s):

I am currently on issue 83 and have skipped the gunport lids for now as i think they will get in the way of the next stage, the stern gallery detailing. I am swerving away from the instructions for this one mainly for simplicity and I also want to avoid any awkward masking / painting at the end. What I am doing here will only really interest other Vic builders but i have had a good think about this and have decided to try it a bit differently. As I am currently working on this right now it will be shown over a few posts as I go along but the first thing I did was to cut up the acetate into window strips instead of using it in one piece - this could very easily all go wrong and I will then just have to order a back issue and start again stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Thankyou for the nice comments, always welcome I have hit a snag with this as my other post mentions, cat had a little chew on the middle window strip, found it under my desk in a bit of a state, i think it was actually chewing the frames i had put on there. Heres the gallery up to now. I first rounded the edges on some 4mm and 3mm strip, then sprayed some A4 paper black to use for strips for the vertical frames, I wanted it to look neater than a painted finish. The strip above the window is a laminate of 3 1x2.5mm strips in a yellow, black, yellow stripe, the pillars will sit on top of this next. stevie_o attached the following image(s):

Thanks Karl, Alan, Nigel - The paper idea came to me after I tried black card but it was too thick. You need to use the very thin printer paper but dont spray with anything water based, use a normal aerosol can as it wont wrinkle the paper up - if you spray both sides it will also colour the paper right through so there is no white edge showing when cut. Looks like the lower windows are going to come off today to be re-done with clear acetate and tape for panel frames. Watch this space

A small update while im waiting for the replacement acetate being kindly sent by Jan Zwart I am working from photos for the gallery and not the instructions, I figured its just decoration anyway so whatever I do cant cause problems on the build later, as long as it looks ok then its fine with me. Im probably going to end up with a simplified version of the real thing and am mainly using pre-painted laminates to avoid any careful painting. The main changes are the vertical stripes on the quarter galleries which I have tried to re-create using five strips of 0.5mm wood, pre-painted and glued with clamps. I have also squeezed a few more pillars in the stern lower row as there are many more on the real thing, anyway here are a few pics - there are a few patches of glue and bare wood but these will all be sorted out when all woodwork is done. stevie_o attached the following image(s):
