Great work Alan I really like the shade of gold,it is a very good likeness to the real thing, after all the original would have had pure gold leaf.I would definitely experiment before deciding to tone it down.Maybe even wait till the castings are in place, you can always apply a wash later on,taking it off would be a lot harder. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Agree with you Nigel, the first pics returned too much glare to really show the qualities to the full, loved the texture and the depth giving the appearance of gold leaf having been applied... still looks better with the naked eye.... .. Intend using only one piece to experiment a little and if the wash doesn't look just right then will leave it as is.... .. In case you are interested here are pics of the gold paint in question.... Thanks again for commenting... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Well done Alan. Metallics are the most difficult to get right and Gold is the most difficult of the Metallics.

Thanks for commenting Martyn, Claret and Andy.... appreciated.... .. Agree with you Andy, gold metallic is not the easiest to work with but I found that applying very thin coats was the best method whilst ensuring I didn't allow the paint to pool anywhere... 4 coats later and the results are there to be seen..... .. Thanks again,,,, Regards Alan

Slow progress but progress none the less.. Have been staining some basewood strips and decking strips in preparation of the next stage... Continuing to remove the burrs from the castings, priming with metal primer and painting. Lower parts have had the diamond mesh fitted, also coated with 2 coats of Humbrol gloss clear for protection. Upper arched section is fiddly, very time consuming and is still work in progress... Hope to have this piece finished tomorrow.. .. Bell housing will also continue tomorrow... Happy building all.. Andy, Kobus and Bernd, thanks for looking in and the positive comments, appreciated... .. Kobus, I didn't use the supplied mesh but aquired some 1mm diamond mesh which I thought looked a lot more authentic.... 1 sheet is more than enough for this build and is readily available, just search for 1mm diamond mesh... Hope this helps. Regards Alan

Likely, we're still way behind with the build and can threfore still source it! Regards Kobus

Beautiful job there Alan, unfortunately have to agree with Kobus, we battle a littel in SA to source some of the items that you guys use, but where there is a will there is a way. Well done. Very nice, the window mesh looks great On a different subject, your sig says you are collecting the Santisima Trinidad - is this the ship or cross section? Steve

Hi Kobus and Hans, thanks for looking in and the nice comments.. Have to admit, wasn't registering the fact you were in SA so forgot about materials being a little harder to obtain..... Still, looking at your builds it doesn't appear to hamper you too much..... Regards Alan

Steve Thanks for looking in and commenting Steve, much appreciated... In answer to your question, its both.... The subscription and build includes the cross section and looking at the instructions so far you are building both in tandem..... Really like the looks of this one and have to say the parts have a look of real good quality.... Regards Alan

Thanks Nigel and must admit I don't envy you having to carve all the lettering.. found it fiddly enough just painting them... Still, I look forward to seeing your finished piece whenever that may be.... ... Just so you can see, I said the piece was still work in progress well now I'm happy to say its finally finished and I'm happy with how it has turned out.....
