OK, Here it is - the moment has arrived. Rock Pig's Build Diary - Hooray !! BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

Before I even start, BIG Kudos to all the Pro's who are helping us Noobs by posting advice, tutorials, pdf's etc etc - I wouldn't even be attempting this if all this knowledge wasn't available!! You know who you are guys, please keep it coming - right to the end, preferably Cool
Also, I personally think both admin and Tomick are doing a fine job, and it's good that they are both reading all these posts and helping wherever they can - so thanks to both of you too!

OK, and now me - complete novice, never attempted anything like this before, hence I'm deliberately lagging behind so I can watch everyone else make a pig's ear of stuff and then supply the solution before I get there! No offence intended to anyone, that's just the way I need the forum to work otherwise this will be quite a short build diary BigGrin - veni, vidi, soditi - I came, I saw, I gave up...

I've subscribed from ish 1 way back when, and although I haven't done much, I'm devouring all posts like a maniac until I feel brave enough to do a bit. So, following the forum recommendations, I first created a pitch for the build. Conveniently located next to where I keep the beer :-

And here's one showing how I fitted it in to my own little private domain..

And here's one of it in use, full activity :-

You should be able to pick out various forum recommendations, including :-

Musical accompaniment...it says Rock Pig, any questions?
Tool to reduce risk of Percussive Adjustment Cursing - Strongbow in this case
Maplin's magnifying light - I read EVERYTHING...
Aliphatic Glue from Cornwall Model Shop, good stuff - I've stuck my fingers to the launch several times already, thanks people!
Johnstone's Masonry paint and floor tile, or Flatter-Outer tool for the Bulkheads
You might just pick out the Revell 1/225 Victory up a corner in top piccie, my "In-Betweenie"
Ever-Present Laptop for those ?????? moments...

So, that'll do for a start. Piccies of my build with next post - bet you can't wait, eh?

Cheers and Hi to everyone, looking forward to this BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

Looking good to go RP. Nice bike btw, Yamaha *ahem* 'Drag star' classic perchance?

(The most unfortunately monikered bike ever)

In the right colour too. (just don't let it out in the rain - rust magnet)

Look forward to seeing progress on the launch.

Hi Cap'n S - It's a V-Star (North American import) so I'm lucky with the name...
Hi Mike - Trolley Jack for prising her out once I've wedged the masts under the top cupboards, didn't plan for that BigGrin

Eh-Up, RP's back with an update BigGrin

I'm a late starter, so no need to go into detail of how I built my jig, how to do a launch (or not), so it's a progress report on the launch, closely followed by a question for the experts - Mr T., this means you !(It's the bottom bit)

Thought the launch jig went together ok, until I saw it in profile - it's that wavy, I think it'll match the surface of the water at least... However, tried to sand it a bit, which of course meant breaking the ribs and sticking them back together a couple of times. Hey-Ho, press on regardless - there's always the Filler, right?

So, did a couple of planks, seemed ok, a combination of Aliphatic Glue, 'Laccy bands and a layer of skin appears to have held them on :-

Doesn't look too bad, apart from the gap between the bottom ones right at the prow; Having trouble getting my head round the required taper ... :-

Fortunately, I didn't panic as it occured to me the Keel might be my friend here - and LO! So it came to be!! Laugh

Not to the standard of some the Pro's, I know; But close enough to fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, fill & sand, etc etc etc...? What's the verdict, anyone think convert to matchwood (Percussive Adjustment) and re-order issue 6, or shall I press on (But not too hard) ?

Anyroadup, here's a proper query (OO-ER Missus!)

Can't help noticing that the bottom of bulkhead No. 15 doesn't reach the bottom of the Keel on the Big B*gger - See photo below :-

However, the top is spot-on to the deck level...See photo No. 2 below :-

Is this intentional, anyone else got the same, do I need a new piece, or what..?
Any assistance most gratefully appreciated!

So there we go for now - better stop banging on, don't want to 'Hog' anyone's valuable time (Sorry - couldn't resist 'Hamming' it up there - Wahey) BigGrin

Hi again RP

Looking at where you are at with the launch planks, it would have been better if you had brought the two 'bottom' planks i.e. the ones on top in the picture all the way to the bows. Also the second plank each side could have been shaped better to lie alongside the first plank. Get these right and the last planks will fit in easier when you get to them. There should be enough spare planks with issue 6 to have another go.

Have a look at Launch build. It might give you a better idea of how the planks can be shaped and fitted.

Pretty much as mike suggests. Bending the planks, one at a time, over the bow and then (carefully) trimming them with a (very) sharp scalpel or craft knife to shape would have kept things as per the build destructions.

No need to start shaping the planks until you get to the midway point, halfway-ish up the hull sides.

Nothing to be too concerned about at the moment though - just follow through and see where things take you. Dry fit as you go and if you come up against any problems, take a pic, post it and see what advice you get.

Keeping the planks butted up tight against each other as you go will save slapping filler about later.
