Hello all. I've been building plastic models for over twenty years and the last two years my interests turned to modern warships. I've always wanted to build a wooden ship but in the past felt my skills would not permit a successful endeavor. These days I'm feeling more confident and would like to tackle the HMS Surprise. I have looked at most of the build diaries and it looks complicated but with help I feel I can pull it off. What are the essential tools that I will need?

James A big hello and welcome, There is plenty of support around the forum just shout and you will get lots of help.
As for tools i would get some basics and then as as you need to go on. Abrasive papaer of varying gritts, razor saw, good craft knife to start with and Aliphatic wood glue along with CA glue for some of the metal parts.

Thank you. Seems I have 90% of the tools I will need. I am worried about the hull planking. I am not sure that is something I can do but I am willing to give it a try. I hope to start a build diary soon. Again, thank you for the welcome.

Welcome to forum jguard68, your in the right place for any advice, there are plenty of excellent ship builders ion here that can help with any problems you might have. With that the Surprise is a challenging ship to start with as the instructions are somewhat vague to say the least but does come to a nice vessel. Builds in progress: HMS Victory.HMS Surprise.
Completed builds: Revell London Bus 1/24.
Builds to do:Sovereign of the seas, Hms Albion.

Thanks for the welcome petpole. See, I was thinking that same thing about the Surprise because I've been studying the instructions and it seemed a bit advanced. Maybe I should start with HMS Victory?

Hi New Guy I agree with Jase The Victory would be the better way to go as there are loads of diarys and any problems if any are all sorted out now. Perhaps when your half way through the Victory you could subscribe to the Surprise so you will have a nice pile of parts to get your teeth into after the Vic is finished .Just an idea.
