Cheers lads for all the compliments, appreciated, small update on the shield.
As I near the end of the centre squibbles my mind is on the lettering round the edges, I`m happy with the carving at the mo, so the question is do I risk having a go at them?? Or do I leave it blank?? (what do you think Alan ??)

Well Willz, I think it well within your capabilities from what I've seen already, and it would finish it off nicely. But in the end it has to be your decision ( he said, side stepping any blame if things go wrong BigGrin )
Seriously though, I think you would make a great job of it, and can't wait to see more of your work.

Cheers everyone for looking in appreciated, and thanks Mr T for the yellow outstanding build medal, very proudly accepted.
On with the shield, been busy doing the lettering, and only just noticed that the band around the edge is actually a belt with a buckle, (learn something everyday) anyhow finished the lettering and so the shield is complete, its certainly no replica but I'm pleased with the overall look.
OK the pictures, the first three I took with the camera in normal mode in an attempt to replicate the naked eye look, and the second three are in macro to show the detail.
Once again lads (and lassies) thats for looking in, as for me, having a break for a week or so.

Cheers everyone for looking in and all the kind comments, appreciated

OK was going to have a week off and still am BUT, heres a little something thats been bouncing around my brain for a while, its a way of creating cannon smoke from a cotton bud, this attempt is very basic with nothing used but the cotton bud itself and only took a few minutes to make, my cannons are 1/72 in scale so the bud fitted without much trimming, it will be more difficult in a smaller scale, anyhow the pics show the simple idea

Well done there Wills! Great idea. If you have a quick look on the sci-fi section I've just posted the pics of my 30 year old diorama just rescued from the garage! You could try a fluorescent orange or yellow marker pen on the muzzle end of the cotton bud to see if the 'flame' looks any good!
Brilliant carving skills and a yellow medal well and truly earned!Drool Cool

What a great little idea Willz, and your input too Robin ThumpUp
When I saw it I ran straight upstairs and raided the wife's makeup bag BigGrin
but as Willz thought, at my 1/100 scale the "stick" part was way too big
and as it was hollow I could not trim it down enough. But not discouraged
I had a go with just cotton wool and paint.

Didn't take that long, and not a bad effect, BigGrin

Willz , you mentioned fibre optics, that had crossed my mind a while back but was just too involved. But after seeing the video below a few years back, I seriously looked into miniature pyrotechnics but could not find anything THAT miniature. Which on reflection was probably a good thing as I would have spend a lot of money on literally a "flash in the pan" one off effect when the ship was finished BigGrin , the model in the video is a lot larger than we are dealing with at over 9ft long and 3ft wide, and I think I read that the gun bore was 3/8" .
Enjoy the video if you havn't already seen it.

Alan
