*Unless the producer is some 'progressive' type who want to tell us how beastly we were to the French Knowing Channel 4, they will no doubt find convincing evidence that Nelson came from a family of West Indian slaves which would make history politically correct once again! Mike T

Best watch is Last Dog "All Night In" Unless, that is, they decided to do a bloody RAS or exercise in the middle of the night Bob

OK i surrender its over 30 years since i last done a watch (b..... sprogs) which brings me to a curious thought why "dog" am sure i got an explanation many years ago but can't remember used to be you did forenoon & first then afternoon & middle then dogs & morning watch is it something to do with scoffing down "scran" at tea time to relieve the watchman doing 4pm till 8pm??? 1st dog 4pm till 6pm LAST dog 6pm till 8 pm

I have found three possible explanations of 'dog' applied to watches.
1. The first dog watch coincided with the sighting of the first evening star which was the 'Dog Star' (Sirius) Problem with this is that during the year Sirius rises above the horizon at different times.
2. Sailors call a fitful sleep 'dog sleep' and the dogwatches only allowed 2 hours off.
3. The third explanation is that dog watch is a corruption of 'dodge watch' because those on the dog watch are doing a shorter watch.
Take your pick folks .. of course, somebody else might know another one

Another programme to watch is "How to Build a Nuclear Submarine", BBC2 at 2100hrs-22oohrs. If you missed it, it is being repeated Tuesday BBC2 at 2320hrs. If you still miss it you can catch it on www.BBC.co.uk/iplayer.It is about the construction of HMS. Astute, the Navys latest and most up to date attack submarine. Should be a good watch. TIS
