Hi Everybody,

Taking inspiration from Ian Smith’s diary, I decided to start building the cutters which were supplied by our friend Mike and are to be fitted to the quarter davits when I get to that stage.

As my victory build is going to have a stain and varnish finish, it was decided that the paintwork of the cutters should reflect this.
So without the ado being in any way furthered, here is how I achieved that goal!

The amount of black card needed to complete the keelson and ribs was very generous, with 2 sheets being supplied with the kit but only just over half of one sheet needed to be used to complete that stage. The end result looked much more realistic and to scale than I thought it might.
However, it was a little tricky getting the measurements right on the inside of the moulded hull to give the ribs their correct ‘scale’ spacing, and I found the ‘Third-hand/Magnifier’ ‘thingy’ that was supplied by DeAg at the beginning of the subscription ‘really’ came into its own for this little build.

The instructions supplies were very comprehensive; however it took me several 'read-throughs' to decide what had to be done. The build itself was quite straightforward, and when it came to painting, I used the Admiralty HMS Victory paint set from the DeAgostini shop, painting the inside and outside of the hull in Wood (Walnut) Brown. The rubbing strakes were painted Yellow Ochre (in keeping with the cutter’s painting instructions) just to make them stand out against the walnut.
The floorboard panel was simply sanded, sealed and given a couple of coats of clear satin varnish, and the thwarts, stern sheets and rudder given a coat of walnut stain.

The PE parts were first rubbed down with some nail varnish remover and rinsed under the tap and dried before painting.
The grapple hook is Matt (Metal) Black, the oar and pike handles – Wood (Walnut) Brown. The oar blades Matt White, and for the tips of the pikes - Revell No 91 ‘Steel’ enamel was used.
As a footnote, the only small problem I had was that the hole in the grapple hook needed to be drilled out slightly to accept the thread.

All in all, I’m very satisfied with the end result in spite of some ‘artistic licence’ being used to blend the finish in with the ultimate finish of my Victory build.

A big thank you to Mike (MWG) for the efforts he has made to provide us with a more authentic model. And to Ian for providing me with the inspiration to make a start on the build again after a lay-off of more months than I care to admit.

Thanks for looking in, comments welcome and happy building to you all.
David
