I took a trip yesterday to Always Hobbies on the look out for something a little different, something that does not fly or float on water and this is what I came up with, a 1:24 scale model of Stephenson's famous Rocket. This Steam engine along with Mallard are probably the most familiar steam engines in the world. At this scale the kit builds up into a model 290 mm long,180 mm high and 64 mm wide.
The kit is packaged in a moderately stout box with a teaser window showing a partitioned plastic container containing mostly white metal castings, this I thought was a nice touch from a presentation perspective.
Removing the lid fails to reveal much more, apart from bracing to protect the content.
The castings are of a high quality with only very light and fine casting marks and burs to be removed. There are a couple of plastic axles, wire mesh, brass rod (coiled), pins, screws and even some stone provided which when painted black should do a reasonable job of simulating coal.
Instructions are provided in the way of a step by step visual booklet and a corresponding assembly instruction sheet.
Three sheets of laser cut ply are provided to make up the bulk of the model. The two larger sheets a 3 ply, the wheels are cut on a sheet of marine grade 5 ply. As would be expected there is no trace of warping in the higher quality 5 ply, and the 3 ply has only the slightest trace of a slight warp, all in all nothing to worry about.
Finally there is a bundle of assorted wood and two sheets of what looks like brushed aluminium.
Nicely presented and packaged, lets see how well it all goes together !
I also picked up a 50 ml bottle of the Deluxe Materials Super 'Phatic glue Mr T recently posted about, and I will let you know how that works out in the build diary.
