Evening All,

In the course of making some adjustments to the decks prior to planking I have encountered a problem with the masts that someone may be able to advise on.

Sephton's excellent book (thanks Nigel) gives the following for the lower masts and bowsprit. I have included a conversion assuming a scale of 7 feet to the inch or 1:84.

Bowsprit (93' x 31") (337.5mm x 9.4mm)
Foremast (95'6" x 32") (346.9mm x 9.7mm)
Mainmast (113' x 38") (410mm x 11.5mm)
Mizzen (87'6" x 29") (317.5mm x 8.8mm)

I have two questions.

1. I have seen other discussion regarding the mizzen diameter that differs from these figures. Do others agree with what I have calculated for mast diameters or am I off somewhere?

2. Although fitting masts is some way off it would be useful to know mast height above deck at this time as a preliminary set up for the masts will save grief later. The knotty problem is that the actual height of the masts above the deck depends on where the mast is stepped and of course the model differs from real practice. From my reading the best advice seems to be to set up the mainmast to the correct height and set the fore and mizzen relative to this. That being the case, what sort of height should the top of the mainmast be above the deck?

Cheers for now, Frazer

Hi Frazer,
Your calculations look good to me. You will have to reduce the height of the masts as the calculations will be from the mast steps on the keel and stem.
If you don't have it already Anderson's book "The Rigging of Ships in the days of the Sprite sail" is excellent and the SOTS is mentioned a good few times.
