Shipbuilding at Portsmouth is to end after more than 500 years!
Warships have been built in Portsmouth since 1497 which can trace its history to King Henry VII. His son, Henry VIII, paid for the Tudor warship Mary Rose. Portsmouth built the HMS Dreadnought, a battleship used during World War I that was notable for its "all big gun" main battery, also welcomed home HMS Invincible following the Falklands war.
A very sad day for Portsmouth and the Royal Navy!

Indeed not good news at all. The announcement from British Defence Manufacturer BAE follows an announcement recently of job losses in the USA as both the DOD and MOD look to cut back on spending. I used to work for BAE Systems at the now closed Woodford plant original home of AV Roe and where Lancaster, Vulcan bombers where built along with Nimrod and the Royal flight. The truth is they need big contracts to keep going and although countries like Saudi Arabia buy into Hawk jets with ought big ship building programs and major vehicle contracts there simply is not a sustainable volume business.
