McLaren are considering promoting young Danish driver Kevin Magnussen to be Jenson Button’s team-mate next season, with the jury still out on Sergio Pérez.
Magnussen, 21, has just won the Formula Renault 3.5 championship from fellow McLaren starlet Stoffel Vandoorne and has impressed in his two outings to date in a full-spec Formula One car, at last year’s young drivers’ test in Abu Dhabi and at the Silverstone test this summer. The team's delay in making a final call is indicative of the importance of the decision. McLaren are enduring the worst season since they entered F1 in 1966. Button’s fifth place in China and Pérez’s fifth place in India are their best results to date and privately there is an acceptance within the team that the driver line-up is not all it could be, certainly in terms of outright pace.

Sergio Perez confirms McLaren exit as Kevin Magnussen waits.
McLaren say that no 2014 deal has yet been signed with any driver except Jenson, and will make a further announcement accordingly.
