Oh well done Benny! Yes, it was indeed the drastic punishment of Keelhauling! As mentioned in the question, it has never been an official RN punishment but many Captains were a law unto themselves! What is not well known is that contrary to good ol' Hollywood (yet again) the object of keelhauling was NOT to sand paper the poor seaman to death on the barnacles but to simply pull him under the water on one side of the ship and drag him back out on the other. His legs were weighted down with lead shot to ensure he did'nt touch the hull unless he was really unlucky in which case he might get a whack from the actual keel as he passed under it!  Knowing the reputation of some Captains they probably told the unfortunate victim he'd have to make a full report on the condition of the keel and hull on his return!  Well done and all yours! hi robin thought it was wrong because bligh was supposedly did this on the bounty and that was well after sots anyway who was the Spartan king that held the Persians to give Greece time and were was the battle fought  benny.

I am guessing this is something to do with flint lock muskets that had a cock (striking arm) that could be set at half cock which was a bit like safety on a modern fire arm. you could only fire at half cock by accident so guess the term means to do something by accident or before something is fully ready? “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

Right here goes The ninth legion was nearly wiped out on the way back from Lincoln. The name of the leader at the last battle was governor Suetonius Paulinus. And the last battle was at the line of Watling. that is the best I could get. Peter Builds in progress: HMS Victory.HMS Surprise.
