Hold onto your hats, gentlefolk. Something BIG is coming.

Edit:

Phase 1:

So, yeah, Andy found me out in like 4 point something minutes. I've started work on the Hood.

In this first phase, we start building the inner hull structure with a keel segment, 2 ribs, 2 deck beams, some spacers and reinforcements for the ribs.

The fit of parts is great. I marked the middle of the ribs and keel independently from each other, than just stuck on the ribs blindly and well:

Yeah. That is some good fit.

Well, so much for the mystery part.

Yeah it's the hood. It finally started in Germany with only 5 years delay. Couldn't help myself and had to jump on.

She's a monster. I have no idea where I'm going to put her. I can't seem to stop working on her. I SHOULD be looking into how to remodel my place to fit her, instead I'm sitting here cutting out the next parts while watching the new Dr. Who.

I think I need help. LOL

But no, seriously. This is an amazing kit quality wise so far.

BigGrin Hi Greyhawk

She is a seriously good kit, when you get the bridge etch you will be dribbling like a kid in a sweet shop although all the etch is top notch as I said before the only let down is the castings that at times are unidentifiable.

You may want to get a resin casting kit like the one in the link below to make your own moulds to produce something that looks like it should. If you have not done resin casting before its a simple process and has great rewards.

That's a great idea actually. Doesn't hurt to learn something new once in a while.

Happy to have you, Alan. It's a priority kit for me as one of my actual subscriptions (instead of having just the whole kit stashed away already), so there'll be no waiting for weeks between updates hopefully.

These first few phases are short and easy, so I can pump out updates fast until I run out of delivered parts.

With phase 2 we get another deck segment, 2 ribs and their spacers, two side beams and two stringers. We begin to get an inkling of the enormous size of this model, it is already 42 cms long at this point.

Looking good. Have you screwed it to the plank. I did to keep it all flat while building. Doing a grand job mate.
Chris.

Not yet. I have doubts about my building board and may get another one this week so I just have it pinned at the sides and weighed down with some weights currently. Took those off for photos. The fit is good enough there shouldn't be major problems developing yet.

I mean this here is just incredible. Stuck those two keel segments together blind with no adjustment and BAM. Only other kit with this great a fit I've seen is the D51.

Phase 3

Work on the hull continues with the third keel segment and two more ribs with spacers/reinforcements.

It's amusing to me how different the keel segments look in the cameras flash light depending on the direction of grain. They all look the same to the naked eye.

Had a first little issue with fit on the rightmost rib where the "feet" sticking into the keel were about a third of a millimeter too long, but this was easily sanded off.

This looks like a great start, can't wait to see more :)

It might sound like a cliche but I do love these first moments of a ship build where the structure comes together and you can see the outline of its future shape.

Have fun :)

Looking good Greyhawk. I've only seen the Hood being built from way past the half way point and although it's constructed in a similar fashion to a lot of other wooden frames ship I'm still going to really enjoy seeing this come together from the ground up Cool

Yeah, that's the nice thing really about these early stages that every little piece you build adds so much to the overall thing. It's kinda like the Internet of 20 years ago when you waited for a picture to load and at first you wait for this really pixely grainy version to show and gradually the picture gets refined more and more.

Yep. Progressive JPGs. Models. That kind of goes together, doesn't it? ;)
