Hi guys. This question is aimed at those of you who subscribe to your builds monthly, but over longer than 12 months. Do you find that there is enough work to keep you occupied, or are you waiting for the next subscription? It's just that I looked at one over 24 months, but the packs came every other month. Thanks for looking

Depends what your building, if its a ship model then at the start you will have less to do but as the build progresses there will be more to do each month and you may find that the next pack arrives before you have finished the previous pack. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi yes it was a ship build. The choice was either ST over 33 months or SR over 24. I just didn't want to be waiting doing nothing for a whole month

As Andy said it all depends on what you are building but I tend to hold off until I get three or four issues before I start plus I tend to add more details which adds a bit more time Hope this helps rgd Martin Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Virginia . Scotland . San Felipe . Corel vasa , Santisima Trinadad X section , Vasa Next Build ? If you look at the official/members builds for Victory, ST or SR you will see the amount of work for each pack from start to finish. Obviously at the start placing formers on the false keel is the norm but things start taking longer when the decks get planked along with the ships sides. The workload increases as you cut gun ports, add cannons, decorations ect, the rigging and sails will be more intensive towards the end Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I just spent 3 weeks on one building phase patching up the prescribed holes in the first planking of Soleil Royal. i expect to spend the same amount of time on the next phase which is turning the planking into a uniform surface by sanding and filling. The next phase after that will likely been done in 2 hours, if I do it slowly. Generally though you can expect the building phases getting ever more involved the further you get to the end.

Ok guys thanks for the replies, and I can see where you're both coming from. Both points are valid. In your opinion, which is the better value kit out of the 2 mentioned? They're priced within a fiver of each other, and looking at the build, they seem to be very similar.

Do yo think she would look good unpainted? I just can't make up my mind. I like them both, but want one that will show the quality of the kit, but I don't want to be twiddling my thumbs waiting for the next delivery .

Totally agree with Andy but obviously it depends on how much time you have if you can keep ahead. many modellers keep a little 'filler' project on the go too Jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

If its a ship model i don't think you will ever be short of something to do. I don't profess any skills but if you look at some of the more talented builders on this site you will see a wood based model is going to keep you a lot busier than say a plastic model were you glue together pre-cast parts. Thats not to knock plastic modellers because the time and effort and skills people put into these is fantastic. With a wood kit you will be learning new skills unless you are a seasoned builder. You will be adjusting wood parts for the best fit. Time will be the decider for you. I have a full time plus job and caring responsibilities and the latter has stopped me over the last week doing anything. I think you will find a wood ship build very rewarding. Its not a race, you go at the pace you are happy with. Instructions are brilliant but if you ever have an issue the forum is always on hand for help. Now your main problem is "what do i buy" and for that it really comes down to what YOU like. I really hope you take the plunge and get to the point of sharing your builds with us all as there is always great interest in what others are up to. I wish you all the very best with whatever selection you decide upon. Happy Modelling
BUILDING: Hachette Spitfire Mk 1A, Constructo Mayflower SUBSCRIPTION COMPLETE (Awaiting building): USS Constitution, Sovereign of the Seas, 1:200 Bismarck (Hachette) COMPLETED: Porsche 911, E-Type Jaguar, Lam Countach

So far the Soleil Royal is a magnificent kit I can't recommend enough. The quality is great apart from some introductory miniscule problem with anchor bands which since seems to have been mended. Building phases are laid out in such a way that one never gets fed up with one particular task (planking can be very tedious and time consuming work, so it gets broken up every few phases with some new interesting fitting to build). It will look great even if you forgo the French blue paint job. A lot of model builders omit the colour on Soleil Royal. The Paris model would be the most prominent example. The only time delivery schedule left time for twiddling my thumbs was between packs 1 and 2 but that is inherent to ship building, there's just not that much to do in the beginning. On the other hand it kinda forces your hand into not rushing ahead to far. Giving the frames proper time to bond is crucial. I am now almost three packs worth of building phases behind the material I've been delivered (with almost daily work on the ship), so there's really no need to worry about being bored after pack 1.

As Tomick points out the Santisima Trinidad includes a cross section as well as the ship, this should be enough to keep you busy. You'll also get a pack each month which ever one you choose

I've subscribed to a number of ship kits and I've yet to come across one where I've been sat twiddling my thumbs waiting for deliveries to arrive. Once you get the initial framework done I think you will find you will have more than enough to do to keep you going.... .. The ST is one I would certainly recommend.... Regards Alan

I can only imagine just how busy you are, but will there be any further posts to the official build diary? Just that going through all the other official ones they look to be invaluable.

It will continue at some point but unfortunately other things of greater priority are holding it off, there are however other builds of this kit on the forum though don't think any have come to completion yet though the same can be said about the Soleil.
