HI all, after many times viewing this fine forum reading what many skilled and knowledgeable people have to say about the anchor, including pics of the real thing and historically accurate books demonstrating the methods involved in constructing the anchors and rigging methods, i am a bit shocked considering the quality of this amazing ship we are making, that a puddening kit wasn't supplied to achieve the trafalgar finish. If people take the time to read the threads posted by mike turpin and the build diary of cliffweld compared to the pic of the anchor by captainalan i think everyone who is looking for the trafalgar finish will agree? In my humble opinion it just gives it that extra touch a class, great stuff! Thanx for your time, maybee the next anchors may have a kit with them? The Scrameth.

You could always paint the ring black and add the off white strips either in off white cotton or paint them.

While I agree that the more detail the better the model, I find myself thinking that were all starting to get picky as to what we get with the publication, dont get me wrong, I will be adding any detail I think necessary as we go, but these extra details we can easily add ourselves, and dont need to be added in the publication. I will however say that I do think a full size plan should have been included for reference. Ship Builds on the go

I agree, I'm going to use sewing thread, but a word of caution, if your wife sees you with a needle and thread, you may have to do all your own sewing in future as the excuse "I cant sew love" will stand no more. Ship Builds on the go

Wait until you get to the sails!
I don't know about this kit yet but I have spent many a happy hour with needle and thread sewing the seams on the sails for the Bounty kit. Haven't started on the sails for HMS Halifax.
I did ask for a volunteer sailmaker but I will leave you to imagine the response!
Just spent the last of my Christmas money with Amazon buying the 'Anatomy of Nelson's Ships'. It will now be interesting to see which comes first issues 2 and 3 or a book from Amazon.
there's a challenge for Admin!

Mees lucky with the sails bit ....my wife has a sewing machine ...and is a very good seemstress....who does lots of work and acts for the local apollo players....(panto to you and me)....the sails which come much much later are not a prob.....coz in the mean time we have other stuff to annoy the living hell out of us ....like building this monster model...

I'm thinking of using Milliput to create the puddening. I'm hoping that once painted it will give a more canvas look than wrapping thread round the ring. Of course the seizing will still be thread. Regards,
David

There appears to be a little confusion creeping in. The above is the diagram in Harland's book. Puddening is further described in the 'Young Officer's Sheet Anchor'. The tarred canvas was first applied as a layer to the ring and then 'stuff' (i.e. unpicked rope ) was then wrapped around the ring. The ends of the stuff were held in place by the seizing which was thinner cord. It is the stuff that you see with seizing in four positions around the circumference. There are already at least two members of the forum who have done really good anchor rings in their builds. I would do one myself to see how difficult it might be, if only issue 2 and 3 would be dispatched!!!! Mike T

Thanks Mike. I guess out goes the Mulliput and back comes the black thread. Regards,

Went down to Portsmouth yesterday and spent some time in the dockyard.
Mike is absolutely right in that the 'stuff' covers the tarp completely and was completely black, as the rest of the anchor.
Interestingly the seizing was in 2, 3 or 4 bands depending on which anchor you looked at! Natural colour for the seizing.
