Revells Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI in 1:48 is a repackaging of ICMs 2006 kit with an upgraded decals sheet.

The decals allow for either building the plane as a member of the 421 Sqn of the Royal Canadian Air Force or as SL718 of the 612 Sqn. of the Royal Air Force. As this is an RAF100 entry the latter is my subject of choice.

SL718 / RAS-D 6 in July 1949 participating in the Cooper Air Race

We open the big package to a deceptively small bundle of parts. Even though it looks small, this is 134 part kit, of which many are optional or not needed. There is a lot of variety provided for how the plane can be built, more so than usual.

The instructions are also tightly packed with 37 steps leading to the finished product. Again over half are only needed if you opt to display the kit with all the optional bells and whistles.

One of these bells is to display the plane being in maintenance, which is the option I'm going to go for with panels for engines and weapons removed. I may also extend the build into a diorama depending on if I can find some nice mechanic figures.

Now first steps first, I'm off to find out how a Merlin 266 engine was actually painted, because from the first few looks Revells painting instructions are based on randomly throwing darts at a color chart.

Good to see a Spit in the comp and will be interesting to see it in a maintenance scenario.

So a Spitfire Mk XVI would have had a US built Packard Merlin 266 engine. The manual takes note of that too. Too bad that no one at Revell bothered to do more research than to copy and paste from Wikipedia.

A quick look between the cylinder heads reveals the engine the kit allows you to build is not a Merlin 266 at all. Instead it looks very much like a Merlin III as used in earlier Spitfires.

My guess is that ICM just designed the engine once and then went and copied it for all subsequent variants of the Spitfire. Which is a bit lazy if you're going to offer an open paneled version of the plane.

Oh well, as we're off into fantasy land already, let's just plow straight ahead and go with Revells paint job after all. I actually DID find an implementation of this paint job. On a Merlin XX. Mounted on a Lancaster. Goody.

Finished building the engine itself so far. There's a surprising amount of detail on thist. Of course it's not Zoukei Mura levels of detail, but still impressive. Fit could be better, but then it always does.

Added the firewall and brackets that hold the engine.

Whatever firewall ICM designed here seems to be a pure fantasy product. It's certainly no Spitfire firewall. Rather than try and paint in some random color, I've kept the whole thing in interior green as suggested by Revell. This at least (someone slappping on another layer of interior green all over all the doodads on the wall) is at least something that apparently happened sometimes (even though I could only find a single reference pic for it).

Wow. Fit is incredibad on the fuselage halves. This will need some major redoing. On the other hand the open engine fits perfectly.

Riiiiiight. Forgot I'm gonna have to pull out. Had some bad interactions between paint and an aging agent I applied while tired and it ended up eating up my parts. Morale of the story: Never be so tired, you start grabbing and using the wrong bottle of chemicals.
