I am a newbie to the forum. I am having problems bending the planks to fit the stern - they either break or splinter. I have tried soaking and using a soldering iron. I have made a jig but it still splinters. Any advice will help. Any builders in the Pretoria area? Thanks Andre Current Build: HMS Victory

Hi Andre and welcome We all run into some difficulty and problems with the build. The forum is the right place to be. All the help and knowledge that you need. I soak the business end of the plank in a thermos of hot water, about 20 minutes to half an hour, and then use a soldering iron to bend, slowly, very slowly, little by little till I achieve the shape, pin and leave overnight to dry. Next time/day take off, final shape and chamfer, fit and glue and pin in place. Hi Andre, With regard to bending the planks at the stern select the softest most pliable planks and soak them in very hot water and leave to soak overnight. Using a soldering iron make the first bend ensuring that you allow the plank to twist as it goes around the stern. If you are lucky one bend is enough but if not allow the plank to dry then soak again for about 30 seconds and continue to bend using the soldering iron to complete the bend. Work in small sections at one time and you will get there. The main thing is not to force the bend but be very patent. Good Luck CMB

Hi Andre
All I can say is good luck I still have to start my section at the stern. I only hope that I will be able to do it since it is my first build and don't have any prior knowledge. Lucky we have some great builders on the forum.
All the best Gerrit

I do not know if this bit of advice will assist. When planking the hull, a dropper must be made. What I did was made a few dropper planks to the specifications given and when I require one, I put it in place and continue planking without going through the whole process. The dimensions are 5mm (width of a plank) tapered on one side to 3mm. Cheers Current Build: HMS Victory

Hi Andre
I live in Cape Town and I too have found the forum very helpful. I have bent the stern planks using steam from the old school kettle (the new kettle have the automatic switch off, so they don't work particularly well). I bend it in stages, usually takes about three stages. To date have only broken a few planks.

Thanks for all the replies. Will post pictures when I figure out how to do it as I am "technological disabled". Question: I cannot make heads or tails of fitting the bow plank. I have looked at the pictures but they are not accurate (Tomick's build - photos are at an angle). Could some one please take a close up from the front so that I can see what must be done. Thanks Andre Current Build: HMS Victory
