This is my build log for the new Occre HMS Terror kit. I was convinced to take this on after watching the magnificent AMC show, The Terror. I am building this kit alongside the Soleil, which is obviously far more demanding, so updates may be infrequent, but I cannot touch the Soleil for another two weeks, so should be able to get quite a bit done. First, some history: HMS Terror was constructed in 1813 for the Royal Navy as a specialised warship and a newly developed bomb vessel. She participated in several battles of the War of 1812, such as the Battle of Baltimore with the bombardment of Fort McHenry. It was at this battle where the "Star-Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key, which later became the American national anthem. Two decades later she was converted into a polar exploration ship and participated in several expeditions. These include George Back's Arctic expedition of 1836–1837, the Ross expedition of 1839 to 1843, and Sir John Franklin's ill-fated attempt to force the Northwest Passage in 1845, during which she was lost with all hands along with HMS Erebus.
On 12 September 2016, the Arctic Research Foundation announced that the wreck of Terror had been found in Nunavut's Terror Bay, off the southwest coast of King William Island. The wreck was discovered 92 km (57 mi) south of the location where the ship was reported abandoned, and some 50 km (31 mi) from the wreck of HMS Erebus, discovered in 2014.The kit was a very reasonable £104 and am so far very pleased with the quality and fit.  First step was to build a small jig for the one piece keel from an MDF board and brackets.  Then I started fixing the frames using clamped small blocks to ensure 90 degrees to keel.  All done, including keel reinforcements and stern fixings.  Next stage will be laying the solitary deck. Thanks for looking!

Small update. I have got started on the deck planking. 6 rows of straight planking through the middle, followed by diagonal planking either side. A strange design I have to say, but it looks good. Getting the correct angles on the diagonal planks gets a tad monotonous though lol. Done the middle and one side. Just the other side to do, followed by a sanding, tidying up and staining. Unsure as to what stain yet, but I imagine it will be along the lines of a medium oak or maybe even a Canadian cedar. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

The decking pattern was to add strength apparently since she would be traversing ice fields.
Watching this build with interest.Looks great so far.Plank bending for that bow is going to be fun.

Thanks, I've had a bit of luck there though with the bow. It's not planked round the bow. It's layered with pieces and shaped. You only plank to the first rib. This pic of instructions shows it. Planking looks very easy. No bends at all.

Looking good, I take it she is double planked as the Conny 1st planking is similar to yours with a thin layer for second planking. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

UPDATEGot a little bit further. Completed the other side of diagonal planking, then over 2 days, coated with 3 costs of Cedar oil and 2 coats of clear satin varnish, with a good rub down between each coat. Quite pleased with the finish. Caulking was just done with pencil, so it's quite subtle, but it looks ok to me. Today, I fixed the deck and weighted down to set properly. After that I just gave the bow and stern a sand to remove excess from the front frames that were protruding from the deck. Next stage is to bend the gunwales and fit them. Not looking forward to bending them, they feel quite flimsy and it's not like planking where there's loads of it, one mistake and snap, i'm up **** creek without a paddle
