My R2D2 build is coming down the home stretch and I want to be sure that I dont screw up by purchasing the wrong batteries. Do you all have recommendations on make, model and vendor? I am here in the US so a domestic vendor would be preferable.

Thanks!

Okay, I feel like an idiot. I should have read the detailed posts on battery recommendations etc found at the top of the page, It looks like I’m not alone waiting for this information. Crying

I am in the same boat.It is a bit of a minefield finding batteries. Most seem to ship from China if you look on amazon and ebay and the Sony/Panasonic ones listed in the instructions seem to be hard to find.Whenever is search them I get links to batteries, but not Sony or Panasonic. It is also figuring out if they are unprotected because most descriptions dont include that.I found a seller in California that is sending me some and I also found an Amazon seller that offered them under Prime. So in theory I should be getting some batteries tomorrow. I hesitate to recommend them until I have seen and charged the batteries.

Be sure to check that the button is a full button rather than nipple type. Which seem to be causing contact problems within the battery box as these tend not have the full height of a proper button.

Those are the vented button type mentioned at post #6 which could cause connection problems.

Hi!

This website is recommended by the owner of 18650.uk for the right batteries in the U.S., but do stress what they are for and the spec as listed in the magazine & online when ordering

Li-ion Wholesale

That should help others in the U.S. too

I spoke with a very nice guy from Texas that was the tech for a battery company and he helped me pick (hopefully) the correct battery.I will post once they arrive and I have charged them.I am pretty sure the ones I have are no good because they only discharge at 4 AMP which according to Apurchase is too low for the R2 D2.

The spec is 3 Amp minimum discharge. You’ve misread what arpurchase has posted in a reply elsewhere.
He states that the batteries he was referring to are around 3 amp max continuous discharge - which is not powerfull enough to run R2.
See post #8 here: https://forum.model-spac...amp;m=303371#post303371

If indeed your battery is the same spec that arpurchase is referring to, then it has a maximum 3 Amp discharge rather than 3 Amp minimum.

So what are you saying.3 Amp and higher minimum discharge rate will work with R2, but 8 to 10 amps max discharge rate or higher is ideal ? So you really want a high discharge rate battery?

I have not seen any batteries where the minimum discharge rate is listed. They only include the max discharge rate.

In the instructions on which batteries to buy it says nothing about the max discharge rate-which would have been nice to know ahead of time. The only statement it makes is that it is "OK"to use high discharge rate batteries because the R2 has protection circuitry built into it.
If the instructions had included the discharge rate of the battery required it would have saved a lot of confusion.

3 amp capacity discharge is the minimum amperage, anything over 3 amps is fine and up to 8 amps is more than ample though can be higher than 8 amps.

The battery spec info was noted into the forum a few moths ago, see post #1
https://forum.model-spac...spx?g=posts&t=28414

A DeAgostini battery is currently in process which we should have finalised update of very soon.

Is there any update on this? I'm in the US with every issue and I'm waiting on completing 92-100 as I want to fit everything in place prior.

I don't think that word means, what you think it means...? </quote>

So it's now been more than three months after the battery box was issued for the first time, and still there's only the vague hints of which battery to NOT buy, rather than an offer from DeAg.

I've got one more delivery to come and then I plan to build my R2 from the beginning; (not that it'll happen next month because Issue 78 has been 'out of stock' for three months so I don't anticipate getting it) what do think the odds are that there might be some movement on this issue in time?

Zero?

Yep, that's what I thought.

Ugh - ordered these

BUTTON Top Samsung INR18650-30Q 15A 3000mAh 18650 Battery - Genuine - Wholesale Discount

from liionwholesale.com

Finished my R2 but will not turn on :(

They do appear to be the aforementioned "vented type" (though the picture ion the magazine doesn't look too different honestly).

Not sure what to do now - I wish the board had a status LED - I've checked all the connections - I have to assume (hoping) it's the battery

Unfortunately the forum has no control over accounts or stock issues, I would suggest you contact c/s for more information.
