BigGrin Hi

In 2008 the Japanese based Good Smile Company who make modeling products like anime, manga and figures sponsored a GT300 racing team, the team was soon renamed Goodsmile Racing. There cars are known for there in your face graphic wraps that cover there vehicles and this build will reproduce one of there 2016 winning cars.

The kit is Tamyia's 1/24 Mercedes-AMG GT3 with the Hobby design detail up kit and lastly the after market Goodsmile Racing decal set. The kit alone will make a very nice model when made but in my opinion this with the graphics has the edge on it.

BigGrin Thanks for looking in and your comments both .

The decals will be a challenge as its a two part layer-the base decals then the in your face girls with swords and the racing spec stuff. This race team has always had mad graphics and I wish I could get every one as a decal set as I would build every one of them. They use the cars to advertise there latest product so the wraps change from season to race season.

The link below shows the 2016 line up of cars and the how the wrap was applied to the car im building. The basic body work of the car is carbon fibre if you can afford the street version then you can have any colour you like over the carbon fibre body but as you can see from the pictures the race versions came as bog standard carbon fibre -

BigGrin The cockpit has been finished by adding the seat, dash, steering wheel and roll cage from the kit. The safety net is from the upgrade set and finishes it off quite nicely.

Started to assemble the body shell im slowly working forward adding the parts and etch grills to each before fitting to the shell. Cool

BigGrin The body has had all the parts added that will be the same colour from the kit and add on set. Next was a clean up where needed and then three thin coats of white primer were added leaving 10 minutes before each coat.

Now to leave to cure over night. Cool

BigGrin First thing this morning the body shell had 3 coats of Zero Paints Mazda Crystal White, probably not the correct white for the wrap used but its a Japanese derived white so should be close enough. This has been curing all day ready for the decal fest to start tomorrow.

The rear wing was made up using the etch parts from the upgrade kit along with the etch upgrade radiator this was made up of several parts and a large amount of tiny rivets. So much better than the kit part that is to the right in the picture. Cool

So do you apply the decals directly to the zero paint without a clear coat Andy? Have you ever had adhesion problems.I see some people on the MFH FB group sometimes have issues applying decals over zero and there was some debate as to whether to apply a clear coat before decaling

Hi Carl

I have always done it that way and without a problem buts its how you apply the clear cote that is the secret. I use Zero paints 2k for my models but it has had reports of being Hot and destroying decals as have other brands of 2K.

The secret is the first cote of 2K, only spray a very fine mist coat over the decals then leave it for 10 minutes. Next add another coat but bat at a medium spry again leave for 10 minutes. lastly do a final wet coat.
