I mentioned that I had acquired a ginormous Ex-Williams team display model a while ago. It's a total mess and has been hacked about quite a bit. From what I gather, it was rescued in pieces, from a skip a few years ago. Fortunately, it seems I do have all the major parts but it will need complete stripping down, a repaint, new decals, umpteen repairs, and scratch-making a lot of missing detail parts. On of the biggest problems isn't actually anything to do with the work needed, it's the sheer SIZE of this thing. Even the basic body tub won't fit on my work desk. The boxes under the body are 1/8 scale Entex kits and the die-casts behind are 1/18 scale. Anyway, off we go...  roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Hi Roy,  No denying that is a monster sized model.  Good luck with the build. If you need a large work table, IKEA used to do a range of office furniture (Gallant Range). Very robust and 1.6 metres in length. They appear regularly on Ebay and a while ago I picked up the corner table and a straight table for £40 (Bloke wanted his conservatory back). Many thanks for that Derek but sadly, my 'cave' is already stacked to the limit and even replacing my current furniture with anything bigger would be a nightmare. I'll manage somehow - all part of the fun really.  Roy.

Ok chaps. First part. I thought I'd start small and simple. This is the upper rear engine cover plate. It's had a thorough sanding down and is now in grey primer. Tomorrow it will get another sanding and then a few coats of green. Fingers crossed... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Another little update. A full day of sanding, sanding and more sanding of the main body. Eventually I got down to a smooth surface. After a good wash and dry, it's had half a dozen very light coats of grey primer. I've used grey to begin with as it's far easier to see any imperfections etc in it. White primer is just too 'white'. One of the pics shows the box with other assorted parts in it. Also - did I mention I have another 1/4 F1 car...? Ayrton Senna's Williams FW15C - last pic. Some more on this biggie. The rear upper body has now been painted green again and I've added the new decals I printed myself. The main body has had a good rub down and is now in white primer. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

A really FEEBLE update here. Sorry chaps. Yes, it looks almost NO different from last time, but actually, it's had umpteen wet sandings and numerous coats of white primer. It's just so BIG, it's almost in the realms of 'real' car paintwork and not a model. NEXT - a gloss coat of white. WHOOO-HOOO... roymattblack attached the following image(s):

This is an absolute monster of a kit but I believe she is in the right hands for renovation. My big question would have to be what the heck are you going to do with her when she's done and will you get her through your doors..... ... Make sure you tuck your arms in when turning round in your workspace ... Will definitely be watching this one Roy....  Regards Alan

Thanks for peeping in chaps. Comments are always appreciated. STILL - It doesn't look very different but trust me - there's been a LOT of work. The first white gloss coats showed up a plethora of surface faults so there's been even more filling, sanding and priming. That really is one of the BIG problems when working at this enormous size. Faults are magnified exponentially. Anyway, I think the body is now ready for some proper gloss coats. In the meantime, I've been drawing up and printing some of the decals that will be needed. This in itself has been a mammoth task as surprisingly, many of the required logo's aren't out there on Google. It has meant drawing them up individually... (groan) Anyway, first trial sets printed. (BTW - the 'blue-ish' look on the numbers is reflection. They are all green.) Anyway, we shall see...  roymattblack attached the following image(s):

More on this big ol' beast. The body has had numerous white gloss coats now, the yellow section has been masked and painted in and I've started to add the new decals which is fairly difficult. Being so BIG, they can easily fold onto themselves at the edges as they are being applied and it's very difficult to get it sorted. All the decals are in place and the body has now had 3 clear coats. I've added metal foil to the inner cockpit walls and the seat is underway... The dashboard parts are a total mess so much of it will have to be made from scratch. On we go... roymattblack attached the following image(s):
