Time to build a 'proper' kit. No more scrap reclaims for a while. I'm going to do this one as car number 1 - the car that really won Le Mans before the rules took the title away from them. It's very evident that Magnifier had some licensing issues with Ford. NOWHERE in the entire set of instructions, or on the box, does it actually say it's a Ford GT40. A start on the engine parts. It's really crazy that two of the kit parts are pre-painted in steel and champagne gold, and the other parts are in a thick, horrible chrome. Needless to say, the chrome was striped off using bleach. With the main block etc assembled, it will all be painted. roymattblack attached the following image(s):

Best of luck with your build Roy: most of the engine and suspension parts are out of scale and just plain wrong, it does make an very good looking curbside model however.

From what I can tell, it's just a re-box of the Trumpeter kit. I'm building it for someone else so we'll see how it goes.

This'll be fun to watch Roy and I'm sure you'll produce a nice model at the end of it. Have fun, at least you won't have to scratch build (probably, nay hopefully) any missing parts with this build?!

I really enjoyed it Roy and I'm certain you will make an amazing job of it (are you going to correct the steering problem on this one)(I thought it was a step to far above my skill set) Ken's the name modeling's the game.

When you install the steering you only have about 19 degrees of movement lock to lock before the wheels touch the wheel arches. Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Thanks for the comments chaps. The main lump of the engine is assembled and it's all going ok so far - except for the ridiculous amount of chromed parts there are that have to be stripped and then repainted. There are around 9 sprues of parts in the kit - 4 of them chromed! Absolutely stupid. I'm following the colours of my reference car so black cam covers it is - not polished metal. roymattblack attached the following image(s):

I'm rapidly learning the kit shortfalls, but I really have to say, I've rarely come across a kit where parts fit SO well, with little clean-up.

A bit more on this one today. The exhaust parts are all in - little retaining springs still to add. I have to say that the exhaust parts are without doubt the best I've ever come across in 1/12 scale for fitting. WAY better than anything Tamiya have ever done. The parts actually FIT without any headaches. These kinds of complex exhausts are usually the part of a build of this kind that most modellers dread. Not this time. A genuine doddle. Some pipework added, and the drive shafts are in. The lower floor has been masked and painted. The picture makes the silver area look a bit patchy but in reality it isn't at all. Many thanks for looking in chaps. I've sorted one of the seats now. I applied ally foil tape to the seat faces and burnished it down really firmly. Then, a coat of matt black went on and was allowed to dry. After that, the rivet surfaces were very lightly sanded with 600 grit wet and dry. I think it worked out ok. An update for those following... The lower body/cockpit just about sorted. Now getting on to the upper bits. Fingers crossed it goes ok. As it transpires, it's not a very detailed kit and many parts are a tad 'iffy' in terms of fit or even accurate placing. However, this is one where I'm going to do my best with what's provided but fix stuff where I can. I just want it to be a fairly good model of the real car. roymattblack attached the following image(s):
