Ive recently used Klear on the front suspension unit before applying the decals. I applied it by brush and think I may have left it on too long as it went really hard and I ended up scraping the stuff off again before applying anything.Mad Did I do something else wrong apart from leaving it on too long? Also Ive found now the decals are drying out they look fine apart from the edges lifting and so not moulding around the suspension, what can I use to get them to mould? Its only minor little things but Ive come so far I just like the little details to be right. Any help would be gratefully recieved.....thankyou

I can't quite understand what you did wrong with Klear.....
It's just a very thin but smooth acrylic coating. I've never had issues with it. I'm not sure what you mean about 'leaving it too long'.....
It just dries after 15 mins or so - that's it.
To get the decals to 'fix' at the edges etc, use Microsol. It's great stuff.
Apply the decal, coat with a brushload of Microsol and leave it. The decals will fit to any contours. Then (when dry!) coat again with Klear.

Roy.

You didn't make an error with the Klear itself, its brush on and leave.

The error was putting it on before the decals, they would have not been able to adhere properly to the Klear finish.

As RMB says above, apply the decals using Microsol/Microset to get them to mould to the body contours, then apply Klear once the decals have fully dried

Agree with this.. Klear goes on after the Decal not before

I always apply Klear before decaling to achieve a nice gloss finish for them to adhere to & it works fine. I recoat when dry to protect. I don't think Klear is your issue. Think you should definatly use the Microsol/Microset as receommend already.

Hi Robbie

I'm trying to understand what has gone wrong here Confused First i need to understand how you are applying the decals and secondly the amount of drying time that your giving the decals?? If your appliyng the decals with a solution like MicroSol or the revell one then I can't see how your getting the decals uplifting as they are from the picture..

Decals should be left to dry overnight and then the Klear applied evenly and sparingly to give a single coat at a time.. leave to dry and repeat... the next day if necessary.

I know we all have different degrees of expertise and to some this method of applying Klear can be daunting to some beginners but may I suggest that when you get your new decals (or remove the old ones in warm soapy water) and leave the suspension in its original black? I think you will be happier in the long run ( I'm not too fond of the decals myself to be honest)

Spencer

Hi, is this just for decals or is this to apply to give it a shine to the whole of the model including silver and red parts of the model ?

cheers

thanks for your comments Warty, what I did was apply by brush a coating of Klear and left it thinking the decals would adhere to it and follow the contours of the suspension then, after the application and about 5-10 mins I used warm water to detach the decals and applied them to the suspension...no Micro-Sol just Klear before hand and warm water for the decals. I think youre right, going back to the plain black would be better, I was much happier before I applied the decals and for my first attempt pleased with the results until then so, tomorrow its out with the warm soapy water and off they come. The ones on the rear suspension are fine does it mean I'll have to take them off too?Cryingthank you again for your support...its appreciatedBigGrin

Hi Robbie

Ok I can see how you have become confused Crying Klear is NOT a setting solution. Klear is a polish to add a protective coating to the decal once it is dry. It's a floor polish but it is used by modellers too Aircraft Canopies and sometimes to protect the paint.

From what your saying is your using it as a setting solution rather than the MicroSol that some here are using.. Easy mistake to make my friend and it can be confusing to some who have never used it before.. Imagine it as a TOP COAT and nothing more.

If you do get new Decals then just apply as in Tomick's Official Build, Warm water and nothing else

I'll PM you and give you my Mobile so if you fancy a chat from a fellow Cornishman then I'll be happy to help

Hi

It can be used for the whole of the model but there needs to be a certain amount of skill involved...

Please don't think I'm saying you don't have the skill to do this but unless used in the correct way, you could end up messing it up

PM me if you need to ask any more Q's and I will be more than happy to help

Here is a VIDEO on how to apply Klear... In the US its called Pledge (they like to be different!)

Don't forget you will get different results due to the type of car your adding it too but follow the basic process and you should have no problems.. Just a tip.. when buffing use a Lint Free cloth (new) and do not press to hard.. You might have to add another coat but do this once the first coat has fully dried (as in a few hours)
