Hi Everyone

I have been a member of this forum since the start of the HMS Victory build and while my only real contribution has been the odd question or two I have been feeling rather "guilty" lately in that I seem to be taking out more than I put in.

I am still in full time work so between that and looking after my disabled Father Time is not something I find much of.

One of my big failings is a total lack of confidence and sees me start many a project that never gets completed: My Victory being a good example - Got as far as that RIB 15 issue and all came to a stop. I have subscribed to SotS and that is progressing well and I really do want that project to succeed. I used to belong (some years ago) to a local IPMS group but we had 2 very skilled members (one still contributes articles on a regular basis to many of the model magazines) but one of these was so "fanatical" that every rivet had to be correct on a kit in the end I gave up as this attitude was totally defeating. Used to put together mainly tanks and felt on the whole quite pleased with my efforts until I came up against the expert. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against creative criticism - it’s how we learn - but this guy’s attitude was really quite destructive.

Anyhow that’s enough about me for now (some might say for a lifetime BigGrin ). I purchased last year the Artisania Latina kit called RED DRAGON CHINESE JUNK and these are a few pictures I would like to share with you. A good few things I have done wrong during the build, and still a long way from getting it completed but hopefully I will get there in the end.

Hi Birdaj2,
the build quality of your work is superb and and an example to us all. I'm sorry that you feel you lack the confidence, but it certainly doesn't show in your work - you must be really proud of your achievement, and I for one would love to see your builds finished.
Keep it up matey, you've 'shivered me timbers'.BigGrin
I, and I suspect, many more of us on this forum would love to see more of your builds - keep them coming.
Happy building

You may lack in time, but definitely not in the skills department and should definitely not in the confidence department. WOW this looks brilliant and pretty authentic. Can't wait to see your other builds. Well done.

Thankyou to everyone that has looked in on my pictures today and left such wonderful comments - it really is appreaciated more than you will ever know.

I am certainly no expert and have made a number of errors as I have gone along. Believe it or not this is only the second build I have progressed with - my first (to help me learn planking) was the Caldercraft CHatham Yatcht. Its not gone as well as I wanted and at this moment resides in a cupboard waiting to be looked at again.

This particular model took my fancy 1. because it was a cheap buy from ebay, and 2 I rather liked the mottling on the wood. The lower half is sapele (so the same as SotS will be providing). The white wood is listed in the guide as Mukali (cannot say I have ever heard of it before).

For the deck caulking I used Black Quilling paper which took an age but turned out pretty well.

Everyones kind comments have given me a bit more drive so hopefully over the coming weeks I will be able to add to this diary to show you how this model progresses.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi there birdaj2

I can only agree with all the comments above, she's a real beauty and one of the cleanest builds I've ever seen. With those skills you should definately go back and finish your Victory and post up your SOTS build as well!
Was the Dragon a double planked kit or single planked? My own Grimsby was single plank and all the hull was Sapele, its a beautiful wood when its been varnished, almost like mahogany (but probably cheaper!)
Keep on with your building, skills like yours shouldn't be hidden away and Yah Boo Sucks to that so-called expert!BigGrin

Many thanks for the comments. Sat here tonight feeling well pleased I posted some pictures. To be jonestown I have no one to share my hobbies with so I have become very critical of my own work, a case of looking at the instructions and thinking " yours don't look like that so its no good".

I have even opened the "cupboard of doomed builds" tonight and had a look again at my very first ever build the caldercraft Chatham yatcht. On the whole it probable is passable and I may post some pictures soon to see if forum members thing it's a bin job or worth saving.

To answer your question this model is double planked. To be honest it was a fairly straight word job in that next to no tapering was required. Started with what the instructions call Samba wood. Looks like lime to me but I am no expert on these points. 1.5 x 5mm was the thickness of these strips. Over this it was 0.6 x 5mm sapele.

Have a couple of areas of concern: one is the supplied cannon. They are traditional canons but without wheels. Look rubbish so I bought some caldercraft wheeled canon in the correct scale - problem they sit to high for the barrels to go through the ports unless the barrels are aimed at the fish! Also made a mess of the first sail. Bought some fabric glue which went on like a rubberised flour and water. Looked awful so had to buy some Amati sail cloth and must now decide how I will seam these (full credit to deagostini for made sails on the victory kit).

Hope you can see lots of issues and problems but I guess that is the nature of these sort of models.

Many thanks again for your kind comments

I detest rivet counters with a passion that borders on wanting to hunt them down (they need to get over their inadequacies and pull their heads from their a***s)!!! This is a hobby. A model is the individuals interpretation of their chosen subject. A good for instance is all the builds on this forum, not one Victory, Sovereign of the Sea, Akagi etc will be identical to any of the others. They will be built as the modeler decides. There will be support and backing from all the other members and loads of help and advice when needed. You have made a stunning build there sir, and I have no doubt that all the rest of your builds will be of the same high standard and quality. Ignore the rivet counters, they spoil this hobby, and continue with your builds knowing that it will be a one off that no one else has got, and that every post you put up will be read, comments will be positive, helpful and encouraging and above all will be appreciated for the time and skill you have put into them!!!
Rant over! (sorryBlushing)

Hi Tony

With regards to your sails, I too used a fabric glue on the full set of sails on the Grimsby and also on the sails on my brother's DelPrado Bounty, I've been trying to find the tube but with no luck so I can't tell you which make it was (I bought it in Woolworths so that's that outlet gone forever!) It wasn't too bad to use but had to be sparingly applied or it stained the sail fabric slightly darker. All the stitching on the sails I did by hand, very laborious and I definately needed a thimble! I just couldn't get the hang of mum's sewing machine to get straight lines!Blushing
The slowest part was probably sewing on the bolt rope which runs right around the edges of the sail. When I've repaired the broken rigging on Grimsby I'll get her on the finished builds (never leave a fully rigged ship in the attic where the changes in temperature can snap threads like nobody's business!!)
An easier option to do the sail's hems might be the newer iron-on tapes sold in haberdashery shops, all it should need is a very thin strip cut to size and a quick iron. I might try that on Bounty's remaining mainsails if I can't find my glue (its probably gone hard after all this time anyway!)

Best of Luck

Robin
