Is there a contents index anywhere for the magazine. At the moment if I want to look a topic up I have to look at each magazine but would prefer to look at a something which would tell me exactly which magazine to look in.

I know what you mean, you just want to checkup on something or refer back check (in my case) if you have missed something in the build. The fastest way I found was to scan through the build diary to narrow down my search and then refer to my Mags. Hope this helps Current Build:- [color=blue]Stash Avro Lancaster (Full Kit)plus some extra issues I picked up at a good price [color=blue]Built:- Norman Catapult by Mantua,Roman Catapult by Mantua,HMS Victory,HMS Victory XSection,Focker DB1,Bismark,English Carronade Titanic Lifeboat,American Civil War Gatling,Hummer,Sopwith Camel F1,Occre Jupiter ,OcCre Wagon, Latina Arab Dhow, Eaglemass Orrery OcCre Rogers 119 [color=red][color=red]RB7,OcCre Missippi River Boat, Model Airways Fokker DR1 OcCre London L>C>C 106 Ugears Scrambler, Ugears Hexapod Explorer UGears Off-Road Vehicle

It is not only an Index for the build I am looking for but also all the articles in the magazine as well. For example each issue contains details of Nelsons world, A Marine Model and a look at the ships of the line.

Hi Sandy, I see what you mean. Years ago I collected a WW2 compilation and it would have just been a pile of mags had it not been for a fully cross referenced index in the final issues. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

If the magazine content was put on line for all to view, then it would negate a reason to buy the magazine.

Hi, It may be I`ve missed the point, but I think the request was for a printed index as an additional episode to the magazines to aid finding required info contained within the collection of mags. An index on it`s own(even on line) would be no use to man or beast as you only get the build parts if you buy the mags and parts as a complete item. Please note it is an index to all the articles that I am after. Not the articles themselves

Would be impossible to include from the outset, but would be possible to tag onto the end and would also be additional cost.

Funnily enough I hit this problem just yesterday when I was looking ahead for something. I also live close to Greenwich Navel Museum and so checking out their models would also be useful. Tomick wrote:Would be impossible to include from the outset, Yes I can understand that, no problem. Tomick wrote:but would be possible to tag onto the end and would also be additional cost. This bit I don't understand, why should there be a cost? No work like this would come without a contents or index. I would certainly find it very useful now though. John

It's not unheard of. I've just completed a14 volume Handbook published at one volume a year at considerable cost. They now inform me that the index will be an additional £100 and will be published in June But I agree the Magazine Articles are interesting, but are included in a somewhat random order and once the series are complete at 100+ Magazines, it will be virtually impossible to find anything.

So it's a money making scheme then.

Cost sounds shocking Andy, they you should have been made aware of the cost at the outset of the handbook

It can't now be done for the Victory as the cost for such would need to be costed into the series at the outset.

An index was not costed into the Victory series at the outset, it must be costed into a series at the outset if it is to be provided as part of a series, and it won't now be done for a series that has long since ended to put on sale now.

I think what Tomick is trying to say and which some don't understand, is that it would have been possible to have an index for the series, IF it had been planned from the start and IF the cost of having it was included in the original costings/calculations for how much to charge per issue for the series (time is money don't forget and it would take a lot of man hours to correlate an index), BUT that would have increased the cost per issue to the customer - which might then put potential buyers off as it might be just too much for what they would want to pay? It's all about balancing costs against profits in order to get enough customers to make a series viable to both the buyers AND the producers? Otherwise what is the point in going ahead with producing something if there isn't enough profit in it to make it worth doing from DeAgostini's point of view? Common sense really isn't it?
To have an index printed as an afterthought or subsequent addition to the series would be unjustifiable to them financially as there would be no way of guaranteeing that DeAg could recover the cost of printing (astronomical nowadays!) without knowing how many they could sell in the first place or by asking the customer to pay up front to avoid any risk of losing money on the idea and something which the customer would most likely be unwilling to do anyway, so DeAg can't win really can they? Since the series is long finished it just wouldn't make sense to even consider an additional publication - if it was still running and financially viable and rewarding enough for DeAg, then maybe .... but it ain't .... so they won't .... and I don't blame them!?
I have all 85 issues of the McLaren magazine on my shelf and if I want to find an article, I just quickly look at the mag covers where it lists what is inside each issue, or even the back cover of the previous issue where it lists what is coming in the next issue, quick and simple really and it is a kind of index after all - does it not do the same on the Victory magazines?

This sounds like a good Excel (or similar) spreadsheet project for someone who has the time and patience to do it. I've already made a spreadsheet of the construction stages in each issue for all 120 issues, which included the work involved in each issue, the issue number that those stages were published in followed by a tick box for stages completed. I'm sure it wouldn't take much more time to expand that spreadsheet to include any or all the articles that were of interest. The only investment would be a little spare time. Happy building Daffy09

After reading all the messages I am now going to do as Daffy09 suggests and make my own index in an excel spread sheet.
