Hi all. Wrong place but nobody reads the surprise section. Lol.
What would anyone recommend the scale length of a deck plank to be on the HmsSurprise. I am going to cut them to scale length but dont know what they would be. Thanks Chris..
Maybe Mike T may well know...

If it's any help my Thermopylae, scale 1:124 has deck planks 50mm long, don't know if you can extrapolate from that or maybe get a few measurements off other builds to work it out.
PS I read the Surprise sectionFlapper

Hi All

Longridge talks about the average length of deck planks on Victory as being about 20 feet. I checked that against the drawings in Anatomy of the Ship and these worked out at about 21ft, so the two different sources seem to agree. To the 1:84 scale, assuming I have got my sums right this time we are talking about a scale length of about 78 mm for the Victory scale of 1:84. I'm afraid I haven't checked out the scale for HMS Surprise, I'm just envious that others have the time and resources to work on her as well as Victory. She may well become a long term project, if ever I get Victory; Halifax; Bounty; Cutty Sark completed in that order!

Doing the sums, the deck planks on Thermopylae would work out at 73 mm in 1:84 scale so again they agree with above.

Cheers

Good Morning Karl

You suggest a plank length of 30 feet. Can you share with us the source for that as two of the most respected sources for HMS Victory suggest 20 feet as closer to the average length of planks.

I think he was asking for a recommendation Karl, I also think the 'these kids of today' was a bit unfair considering we all have to start somewhere, as I asked that same question myself when I planked the deck of my Bounty.

'want it all done for them' is doubly unfair mate, considering the vast majority here have never done anything like this before are in need of advice and help, as both of use have at least got past that stage, the last thing we want this forum to end up like is a 'I have the information but aint gonna give it to you' place.

I hope you don't take all this the wrong way and is not intended to cause a rift but the more questions people ask the better, it will help all of us make a wonderful ship, including you and me.

Magpie, I did post on the Surprise section a few links which could help.

Hi All. Thanks for the comments. I didnt want to cause a heated discussion.
I have taken 21ft converted it too mm then divided by 48 . As the Surprise is 1/48.
I then get 133.3mm. Is that the plank size? Also would 3mm wide planks be inscale. Thanks Chris.

Hi Magpie

I certainly didn't expect that kind of response, I tried to answer your question as best I could. Mellow

I would agree with your calculation for the length.

Going back to Longridge, he quotes 3/16 inch for his plank width. If you scale that up you get a width of 9" for the real thing. If you scale up 3mm for your scale you get just short of 6". If I was doing Surprise, I would be looking for 5mm planks, what does the kit supply?

As a footnote, I think it is a good idea for forum members to discuss this kind of detail. If we can help each other, I would have thought it was all to the good!

None of us want to produce a model which is not as good as it might be because we rushed some of the planning and calculations. No matter how much experience we may or may not have, surely we are all on a learning curve of some sort. I know mine is at least as steep as others!

Suggest you look at RussGs plans as the scale roughly equates to a plank length of 19.8ft x 9.38ins wide.
Now must get back to the ****** launch.Laugh

I personally feel this site is becoming way too competitive! This is not a popularity contest, or a contest to be the best modeler, this is supposed to be a site where we can all enjoy the hobby of ship/boat building, sharing ideas in a mature fashion, and most of all, having fun in the process.

I don't understand this concern amongst some of you about scale, length and width of planks etc, seeing that DeA will be supplying the correct size for everything????? unless of course you are questioning their scaling. I am not concerning myself with all that stuff because I am finding that it is muddying the waters, so to speak. Said my bit.

Hi,
I am not questioning scale, All I want to do is make my planks on the deck more realistic. Needing to know the length of these is needed by all of us. When we simulate where the planks butt together. The planks don't go from front to back in one piece. We don't have to cut them into scale lengths but need to mark on the plank a joint in the correct position.I am choosing to cut them to the correct length instead. And deag don't tell you the length, I'am nearly finished on a deag ship so would know.

Hi I would presume they will be correct width. I am doing the HMS Surprise which is 5mm planks. It was the length i needed to know. So am Not wanting to push everyone into worrying about correct widths of planks.

Sorry Blushing all for the Posts on this subject started by me with a quite simple question.

Hi magpie,
I have tried to convert from 1:84 to 1:48 and come up with a scale plank length of 100mm to 18ft.This may help in your build.
Cheers
