Hi Jase.
Nearly there now. I've found your diary and detailed descriptions of your techniques very helpful as I'm sure lots of us have. Loved your easy way to make a 'stay mouse' - that was a brilliant find, thanks for sharing that with us.
Happy building

Completing the Rigging

final pictures of the rigging. the instructions are very detailed, when cross referenced with the plans.

There is plenty of rigging thread provided so do not worry if something needs redoing.

The anchor is up next

Thanks for looking in. Jase

With the rigging completed we can now finish the ships boats.

The kit comes with two boats. I have chosen to display my model with just one boat stowed. if you wish to display both boats they are stacked one on top of the other. the second boat is built in the same manner as the first so will not be described hear.

The thwarts are cut to length and sanded to fit the curve of the boat edge to make a snug fit. It is best to not secure them in place until the boat has been fixed on the deck.

Before placing the boat items in place it is best to fix the boat to the main deck firs. The boats should be secured to the deck using four copper eyelets in the deck, painted matt black, and secured with two lengths of 0.5mm natural thread.
However this is difficult to achieve as the ships boats are stowed up against the bulwark, it makes the process of securing the thread to the copper eyelets in the deck very difficult. This is my method of installing the boats to look authentic but with greater ease.

The kit comes with two boat chocks. In the instructions these are used on the port side and are visible on the deck, however I have fixed them to the ships hull on the starboard side so ultimately will be mostly hidden. attache the chocks with an even spacing then drill a hole in each chock through the side, not the end. a copper eye is then glued in place so that the 'eyes' face each other on the inside of the chocks one pointing astern one pointing towards the bow. attache a good length of the 0.5mm natural thread to each eye.

The boat can now be glued in place ensuring the threads are free, I clipped them over the side of the hull with a single peg. to ensure the boat sits flat I clamped the side of the boat to the bulwarks while the glue set.

If you are stowing both boats instal your thwarts and fix your second boat in place.

I chose to install the boats belongings before adding the thwarts as access is easier.

1. Rudder. the supplied rudder comes without a tiller arm. this can be simply created using some brass wire bent into shape. drill a hole through the rudder and glue the wire in place before painting the whole assembly white.

2. Grapple hook. The grapple is made of two parts and needs to be painted matt black, mine has been chemically blacked. yo can attache some natural thread to the eye of the grapple, if you do it should be cheesed, I chose to stow my rope separately to spread to the items.

3. Boat hooks. the two etched boat hooks should be removed and painted with a wood handle and black hook.

4. Oars. there are two sets of oars and they are different lengths. the 6 smaller ones are for the smaller boat. the oars should all be painted white with copper blades. once dry separate into two groups of 6 and tie them together with natural thread.

the grapple and rudder and rope were glued in place the thwarts then added before placing the boat hooks and oars. with this done two eye hooks painted black are added to the deck, drill holes and secure the hooks at an appropriate distance and secure the thread to the eye lashing the boat in place. the finish is authentic to how the boat would have been stowed, but easy to install.
