That looks a good upgrade with the change of led. Looking forward to seeing how you design your base. Tony Happy Modelling

Tony Hi Tony, Thanks for looking in and taking time to comment, appreciated. The change of led`s certainly improved the starting lights, but I`m going to try some more tests before I finalise the starting light design. As for the dio base design, looks like I`m going to have more time at home as we heard on the news tonight that we are in "Tier 2" as of end of Saturday. Seriously glad I don`t have to worry about work any more. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Its been a nightmare of a year Derek that is for sure. On a positive if you have a project like yours to keep you occupied that is a good thing. If i get to march next year that will have been 40 years with the company i work for but at this moment not sure what direction things are going as had a major family crisis sadly so not having the best of times at the moment. I still have my latest spitfire build to write up and post and hope to get that done this weekend. I think its only forums such as this that are worth their weight in gold to give your mind something to focus on. Looking forward to seeing how your project continues to grow. Tony Happy Modelling

Hi all, This update is to show the layout of the dio base (bad draw pad exercise), that I hope will give insight as to what I`m up to. The general idea is that I don`t want any permanent connections between the electronics base and the dio base, because the dio base must lift off the lower electronics base to refill the smoke generators with oil and give access to all the electronics. (Just in case ) The smoking Funny car will be rigidly fixed to the dio base as will the rear axle drive, but not connected together. Saves shaking the car body to bits if the rear wheels get a shake on. So, as can be seen in the diagram a hole is required for the drive gear to pass through and work the rear axle, plus two holes to let the smoke through to the rear wheels. Hence the previous test beds I`ve made. The smoke generators will be supported by a frame no more that 2mm below the dio base and the electric motor and gears will be adjustable to get the correct gear mesh to the back axle The longer Pro-Fuel car will move approx 3-4mm to get into the final start position. A bar that can be attracted by an electro-magnet will be attached to the underside of the car and through the dio base. A magnetic reed switch will be supported to sit in a cut-out in the dio base, but not attached to it. A micro magnet will also be attached under the car in a position that it will operate the reed switch when the car moves forward that short distance. The switch in operation will start the next stage of the starting lights. The attached pic is the badly done draw pad exercise I mentioned earlier that may help with the explanation above. By the way the final dio base will measure 740 X 450mm. On with the measurements then. Derek That is all very well planned out. Looking forward to seeing that baseboard starting to come together. Tony Happy Modelling

Hi All, The next stage in the "Epic" having worked out the end height of the dio base was to make the exact gearbox drive to get the motor drive up to the rear axle of the Funny Car. To save cost of hard wood the prototype is made from balsa block. The gear height has to be millimetre accurate from the electronics base to the dio itself so the gears mesh accurately through the dio base. So two pics: 1: Showing how the gears are set. 2: Showing how the gears will be enclosed. Trip to B+Q tomorrow to get wood for the dio support frame. Thanks to those who look in and to Phil and Trev for your comments. @ Phil: 20 years working on electro mechanics helped, my mother painted lead figures (when such things were allowed to be sold) so an early interest in modelling and the wood working carried on from school days as did the engineering bit as I was at one of the first schools in the country to do Motor Mechanics GCSE courses. All set me up for my working life, which I`m now retired from. So have lots of time to mix them all together. Until next update and beyond, stay safe.
