The Jupiter locomotive was commissioned by the Central Pacific Rail Road (CPRR) in 1868.it was built in New York and then disassembled and shipped to San Fransico and on to Sacramento California, the headquarters of the Central Pacific rail road. She went into service in 1869 and was one of the locomotives used in the Golden Spike ceremony. This ceremony celebrated the completion of the transpacific railroad. The train stayed in service until 1909 when it was scrapped.Several replicas have been constructed and have been used at the Promentory national park where the train re-enacts the golden spike ceremony. The train is a 4-4-0 steam locomotive. It is wood fired and that is why it has the large chimney to catch sparks. The KIT is a multimedia kit made by the Spanish company OCCRE.The parts consist of wood metal, plastic. Although the instructions are fairly straightforward this is a challenging kit to build. There are some fit issues and building requires you to work with wood and metal, including bending metals and reshaping of parts.it is a fairly accurate kit. The biggest challenges with the kit are the decals used for the ornate paint scheme. They are very difficult to apply because they are large and delicate and don't release well from the backing paper. On the whole it was an enjoyable build and I think it makes a nice replica of this famous train. here are some pictures of the finished engine and tender darbyvet attached the following image(s):

The boxcar Boxcars were just starting to be used in the 1860s as the rail road was getting more and more track laid it allowed the easy and cheap transport of good across the country. The boxcar I made for this train was based on references pictures of typical boxcars of the 1860s.They used simple link and pin coupler and were a very simple design The boxcar was made from another OCCRE kit.The OCCRE kit was a 1940s style german boxcar.I modified the body to backdate the appearance and used stencils to make the lettering. The OCCRE kit was OK, but boxcars usually had double bogeys are were 8 wheel instead of 4 wheel. Here are some pictures of the boxcar. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

And to bring up the rear........the caboose Caboose were a relatively new invention in the 1860s.They were small 4 wheel cars with signal lamps and they often had a cupola I could not find any 1/32 caboose kits anywhere. So I purchased a cheap Bachmann G scale caboose and cut the chassis to shorten the body.I then scratchbuilt the body of the caboose based on reference photos using wood and scratchbuilt the signal lamps. here are some pictures darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Mate, I don't know what to say, it is beautiful and no mistake personally I love it and I did toy with the idea of getting it before you or Gill did, I am soooooooo glad I didn't I could never have done what you've done, it is a complex kit and way out of my comfort zone. You have produced a model anyone would be proud of (if only I was that good) Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Thanks again everyone. Onwards and upwards literally. THE TRESTLE BRIDGE I decided to build a trestle to display the train on. The central pacific railroad started from the west coast of America in Sacramento and travelled east to meet the union pacific railroad heading west from Missouri. There was however a big problem for the central pacific railroad. Namely the Sierra Nevada mountains. It took 33 trestle bridges and 18 tunnels to traverse the Sierra Nevada mountains. There was several different designs for trestles. The commonest trestle used by the CPRR was a 5 leg trestle. This is the design I chose.I bought some cedar and plans. I also decided to not use the stock G scale track that I used to display the train on.It looks fake to me and the railroad ties are hollow and poorly molded. So I decided to use the rails, repaint them silver and I bought some spikes so I could make my own tracks. here are some pics of the initial construction. The main portion of the trestle is finished.I also have to add the bracing and then put the railbed on top of the trestle. darbyvet attached the following image(s):
