NMBROOK wrote:Yes Alan, you sound like you have it in hand I will keep dropping in and see how you get on,but I think you have sussed it for yourself. It really is a case of just taking small amounts off until you get down to where you want.A large sharp scalpel may be preferable to sanding as you can get those crisp corners. The only thing that I would of maybe done differently is to use lime instead of balsa, principally so the facets could be worked with a cabinet scraper.Good luck mate!! Kind Regards Nigel P.S.yes fag packet printed in mainly Italian Thanks Nigel, have been trying out a template made from cardboard but decided I wanted something a little more substantial so have made my template out of some spare bamboo strips.... Now that its made am just letting it all set before getting on with the next part..... Thanks again, Regards Alan

Finally managed to move forward with this build and completed the fairing of the hull... still have some minor adjustments to make to the stern but feeling positive now on how it will turn out... Started planking the beast, have deliberately left the uppermost plank off the build.. this is to facilitate the removal of the decks later to give me access for lighting her up.... when I fit the uppermost plank it should take me to exactly deck level after the decks have been planked.... Tomorrow will start applying planks to the other side to ensure I am planking evenly without applying stress to any part of the hull..... Happy building all.... She's really bringing out her graceful lines now Alan, and boy! what a big girl she is! I'd love to see her up against my little 14" plastic Revell Sovereign of the Seas (including her bowsprit!), probably look like one of those rowing boats when the Titanic pulled away from Southampton in the film! The ships really take on a totally different look when their skins go on and cover up their ribs and I'm looking forward to seeing her 'flesh out', keep up the great work! Coming along nicely there, I was going to buy this kit before I started the Waverley so will be very interested to see how it goes (incidentaly if you want to light it up leds I think are the way to go and they are easy to wire up thanks to the (led series parallel array wizard) (sorry don't know how to post links to websites sites not good with computers but if you Google it you will find it, it is free to use)all you need to know is the forward voltage which for the majority of leds is 3.1 v and the forward Ma forward current which is usually 20 you put in your source voltage and the number of leds you are going to use and it will give you your wiring diagram. I have used 10 in my 1/200 titanic and I think that will be enough but I may add a couple more to the upper decks if it needs it. Now I know where to put it in will post some pics of my build (unlike yours its just a plastic kit) Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Robin Hi Robin, thanks for taking the time to look in and for your comments...I'm just happy to finally get to planking this girl and yes, she is big but that is one of the things that appealed to me, gives scope for improvements.... Your 14 inch SOTS against her,,, maybe it could be used as a figurehead..... .. Regards Alan

I do intend to light this one up and I have been given some information on using LED strips. Due to it's length I intend to do some experimentation with this as these strips have all sorts of connectors and hopefully will help to keep some of the wiring down to a minimum... Will also be using single led's and fibre optics for items such as cabins and deck lights..... .. Appreciate your advice.... Regards Alan

Jase Thanks Jase and you really know how to ask relevant questions. .... The hull is double skinned plus there are layers of ply etch showing all the hatches and portholes and am thinking of how to modify the ply to show the plating.... Will probably be purchasing additional ply, as thin as I can find it and see what I can do from there... Not to keen on using plasticard or metal tape.. still I have time on my hands to think about this one... any ideas would be welcome..... Regards Alan
