stevie_o wrote:Beautiful work Alan, I was looking at the build pics of this on the main DeAg site today, unbelievable how many decorations you have to cram into that stern, looks amazing though. Steve Thanks Stevie, appreciate your looking in and comments..... You are correct, there is an unbelievable amount of decoration to cram into not only the stern but also along the sides of the hull and on the prow..... .. I also have other ideas for the deck areas but am not doing anything in that area until later in the build.. possibly casting some items when I get the casting kit I am looking at.... Will keep you posted.... Regards Alan

I was considering using wood instead of paint on my ship's hull. Looking at your build, you have convinced me to go on with this plan. I am still in search for altemrnate wood to replace the red paint strip. I admire your work, Alan. I am curious about the rest of your build. Marcel Thank you very much Marcel for the very kind comments.... I pondered for a long time over painting or going with walnut veneer and now it is done I in no way regret the decision.... .. Hope you find your alternative to the red strip, I decided to paint this part and am happy with the results.... .. Will be following with interest to see how your second layer will look in the end..... Thanks again.... Regards Alan

Very interesting to see how you guys have to punch out your parts. Here in New Zealand we get loose parts. I guess this saves a lot of waste wood (and some trees) but it could also explain why there can sometimes be missing parts.

Hi Sinbad, have to cut out the parts from the frets and I like it this way as it helps to prevent breakages... In all the issues I have received I think there have been 2 with a part missing but other than that I think the quality is nothing less than superb..... Regards Alan

Hi all, issue 75 complete now.. Started by fitting the decals onto the brass etch shields, these were attached using Micro Set and superglued to the stern gallery. Coat of clearcote added for protection.. Cut all the pieces for the forecastle gunwales from the fret and cleaned all the edges carefully using a fine file.... Stained using 3 coats of walnut stain, and painted some parts using the same black and burgundy used on the hull... .. Uprights were cut slightly longer as I wanted to ensure a smooth line all the way round the forecastle.. these were sanded down gently to get the correct heights. Uprights were stained using medium oak... . Once attached, used some wood filler to smooth out the deck line that could be seen on the outer hull and sanded smooth... Moved onto drilling and cutting the 4 gun ports on the bow bulkhead, this was done starting with a 1mm drill, a round reamer and a piece of dowel with a fine grade sandpaper attached. Finally applying a matt varnish and touching up where needed.... Am very pleased with the way it all turned out.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
