Keep posting the pics. I guess its true that in the modeller's world the modeller's next one will be better, but not his masterpiece. Anyhow, I enjoy your work and it looks great. "Rather try and fail than had failed to try".Sovereign of the Seas Model Space forum: Marcel's build

I do believe that is why we are on the forum and share as many ideas as possible, to make our current builds the best we can. Love it. Not up to this point yet, or for a while, but is it a scale issue you are dealing with, because if that is the case, then check out ebay under jewelry findings and you can find all sorts of rings of different colours and sizes. I had some fittings missing from the San Felipe cannon dio and found a perfect match in this section of ebay. Good luck and happy building, Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Good luck and happy building, Regards delboy271155 (Derek) Thanks Derek, always appreciate you looking in and for your comments..... The rings are ornamental gun port rings and they are supplied as part of the kit... they are around 4mm wide and the instructions give the option to grind them down to 1.5mm and fit to the round gun ports... the other option was to leave as is and paint a 3mm strip around the ring black.... Dry fitting they looked a little to wide for my liking so decided on the grinding down option..... Have to do 16 in total and so far I have done 6...... .. Still, it will take as long as it takes and so far it is working out quite well.... Thanks again and regards Alan

Short update on progress with issue 76... Started by preparing and painting the 6 small decorations and fitted them the left stern section under the shields... Decided the gun port rings were too thick as they were to simply paint gold and black bands so using my dremel with grinder attachment I set about grinding them down to a width of 1.5mm.... A rather slow process and have to say the metal does get quite hot.... One of the photo's shows the difference in thickness... Painted the rings gold and have now fitted them to the gunports around the forecastle... .. The instructions also call for some of the wales to be left as natural wood and others to be painted gold.... didn't quite think it fitted with the overall appearance of my build so decided all the wales would be painted gold..... First one now fitted and am pleased with how it all looks..... .. Next stage is to continue fitting the wales, the upper gunwales and of course grinding down the remainder of the gun port rings..... .. Happy building all... Beautiful Alan! She's really starting to look the part now, with all those frames and posts she almost looks quite delicate from the deck up! Its a shame about those gun port rings, why didn't they just mould them the right size in the first place? And if that metal is anything like the bronzy stuff on my Victory, its as hard as hell to try and grind or file too! Keep up the great work and had any storm damage up there? We've been ok until the last one when the poor ferret's hutch got it's rear tarpaulin shredded overnight. (Ferret sleeps in the kitchen though so he don't care! ) I was working up in the attic at the time, never heard the roof creak so much! Robin Thank you for the very kind comments Robin, very much appreciated.... As for the rings, the thing I have noticed with these partworks compared to complete kits is the partworks show and give the opportunity to build components in different ways, such as the way the gunwales on the forecastle were built (off the ship) and the ones on the quarter and upper quarterdecks which are built on the ship.... The differing ways means it helps to introduce different skills for the same results and its the learning of these differing skills I find so enjoyable if not challenging..... The rings can be attached as is or, you can do as I did and grind them down to something that looks a little more to scale... gives the individual the choice... All good for us novice builders I think..... Up here, the weather has been awful, lots and lots of rain, strong winds and some localised flooding but nothing compared to all those poor people down south..... Regardless what happens you ensure you and your family stay safe, that is far more important than anything else..... Thoughts are with you all down there..... Regards Alan

Hi Alan, come to Cape Town where its a blazing 32 degrees Celsius today with no breeze to cool you off. The sun will turn you into KFC. I'm too sweaty and lame to work on my build. I'll rather browse the web. I am not sure about the rings, but looking at the detail on the home page, their are suppose to be more décor that surrounds the rings. The barrels seems to be longer than the others. You can create decorations to be fitted between the ladies to soften the area (a women's touch). I was thinking of getting an extra issue of the metal castings to be sacrificed as inserts of my own. Tip: use clear engineering fluid [TAPMATIC-brand] to cut metal to a very fine and smooth finish. It also helps with the clocking of the tools. Remember to rinses off the oil afterwards. Its available at local general engineering supplies stores. I am curious to see what you came up with this part of your build. "Rather try and fail than had failed to try".Sovereign of the Seas Model Space forum: Marcel's build

I don't think the image you see on the home page is identical to the kit we are building so I tend to ignore that one.... Have a few ideas floating around in my head in the way of enhancements but am not going to do these until later in the build..... .. Thanks for the tip, will look into that one.... Regards Alan

Things are not too bad here and am happy to say my house is too high up to really be affected by any of the flooding so I count myself lucky..... Thanks again and best regards Alan

Issue 76 going slowly right now with lots to do and quite a lot of fiddly bits too.... .. Have now finished fitting the wales down the port side.... also fitted the gun wales for the quarterdeck and upper quarterdeck, just waiting for the gun port rings to dry before fitting..... Still have the starboard wales and quarterdeck gun wales to fit and that will be started tomorrow...... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Beautiful Alan! Like I said before, on her way to becoming a masterpiece!! And those wales look super, are they light wood or did you go for the gold? We're fortunate too, live on a hill! Although we also live within 200 yards of a small stream or 'brook' so if we did get flooded some insurance co's wouldn't pay up! (First I've heard of that little clause, of course the brook would have to increase from a foot deep to about 50 foot to reach up here! How about Noah's Ark in the new ship model suggestions! Keep safe up there. Robin Hi Robin, thanks for your comments they are well appreciated.... the wales are indeed painted gold although the camera didn't pick that up too well.... leaving natural wood just didn't look right and am pleased I changed it.... Looks as though the worst of the weather is over so hope you all get a chance to recover from the last few weeks...... Regards Alan

Hi all, finished the port side as far as issue 76 is concerned by adding the 3 gun port rings to the quarterdeck gunwales.... Moved onto fitting the first of the wales on the starboard side and am again waiting for parts to dry after painting.... Started work on issue 77 by building the figurehead platform, this I hope to fill and start painting tomorrow.... Also fitted the 6 small ornaments under the shields on the starboard side and finished the evening by fitting the first of the figures onto the stern gallery.... .. Am hoping to get quite a bit done this weekend so more to follow soon... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
