Hi Everyone Slow progress for the month of October 2015, but report with pictures is posted below... Working through issues 66 to 70 inclusive: * Painted and installed metal decorations at the ends of midships hand rails... * Cut the four 12mm round holes in the quarterdeck bulkhead - trouble is, all the little top bits fell out...  I have no suitable power tool for the job so had to first drill a 2.5mm hole using a pin drill then expanding that by using a 6mm HSS drill bit by hand. Then I used a small round file and finally a half round file that did the damage at the top!...  No matter, the intention was to refit the little bits by glueing them back in - but that was unsuccessful so I ended up by using wood filler... * Painted all 16 of the first round metal gun port frames and fitted the first four in the quarterdeck bulkhead... * Surface treatment and fitting of the quarterdeck handrails - a little tricky but no dramas here... * Planked first and then fitted the upper quartedeck and bulwarks (which needed a very slight curve to them) All very straightforward... * Surface treatment and fitting of handrails to the poop deck and upper quarterdeck - again, a little tricky but no dramas... Hi John looking good m8 I had the same problem with the holes but managed to glue the bits back Keep up the good work rgd Martyn Building ?

Hi All again * For the remaining round gun ports I reinforced the tops of the bulkheads front and back using 3mm x 1mm softwood strips, so once the holes were made I just needed to sand the strips back a little prior to inserting the round frames... - It worked pretty well... * Installed gratings and stairways to the forward deck, Quarter deck and poop deck - all fairly straightforward... Lovely work John and looks like you managed to get over the challenges of this section.... .. A little tip for creating round holes like this is to glue medium and fine sandpaper around 8 and 10mm lengths of dowel and use this to enlarge the holes, works a treat and you should find the possibility of the tops breaking away is minimised.... .. I'm currently working on through issue 71 and have a little problem... Got the rudder made up and painted and the 'orrible little pintles and gudgeons ready to fix on... The problem is with item 20 - "take 11 rings and eyebolts that came with a previous issue"...  I have plenty of eyebolts that came with issue 63 but there were only 48 rings in issue 70... I have used 44 of those on the hull rings so only have 4 remaining now... I have checked every issue back to number 1 and there are no more rings there and checking forward issues have seen a few in issue 84 which are to be used for something else at a later stage... Alan, can you tell me if there are any more rings coming in later issues? In the meantime I found some zinc coated wire 0.6mm dia. in the shed which blackened very nicely in the Krik. The official rings are 0.4mm so I formed a ring on a 2.5mm drill bit and hung it on an eyebolt... It works ok but making them is tedious and time consuming... Hello Alan Yes I've started to use a 3mm drill bit as the former - the 2.5mm was just a tad too small... Thanks a lot for the link to making the fiddley bits - I've been thinking ahead to the rigging and wondering how on earth I was going to tackle it as my eyesight is not what it was and my fingers aren't so dexterous these days... Hi john loving your work ,she's a beauty.I wouldn't worry too much about the rigging, my eyesight isn't what it was and I have been called sausage fingers before now,but with good lighting and some decent rigging tools its not too hard. Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

Hi John, my eyesight is not what it used to be either, its age I'm afraid with me..... I use a set of optivisors and find them invaluable for all the close up and rigging work..... Not sure where you would obtain a set down your neck of the woods but well worth investing in a set if you can..... http://www.amazon.co.uk/...&keywords=optivisor

Much appreciate your assistance... So I've purchased one of those optivisors and some other useful stuff such as a nice set of tweezers - I've been managing with one small GP pair with square ends up 'til now and a good set like this is a real bonus... I've also ordered one of those Archemedes type push drills that I saw in a previous issue of SotS...this kind of stuff is hard to get in these parts!... I am advised the package can be expected by 25 November so another two weeks will be no hardship as I've managed things up til now... Once again, thanks for your help Alan. Regards JohnP

Hi Everyone November progress reported below with photos... Working through issues 41, 70 and 71... * Fitted blackened eyebolts and rings into hull both sides... * Assembled and fitted rudder - hinges were a little tricky and fortunately there were 2 extra ones in the kit which were used up!... * Replacement issue 41 was received together with the missing hinge fret for the forward bulkhead door, so I was able to complete the installation of detail in that location... My newsagent very graciously exchanged issue 41 for no charge... * Started work on the back-log of cannons - 6 for the main deck and 10 carronades. I was not happy with the first 4 cannons made "per spec" early in the build and which included brassy trunnion caps and eyelets, and barrels painted bronze... - these didn't look right at all in my view, so I dismantled and rebuilt them using black trunnion caps and barrels - they now look much better... I'm not too keen on the blocks either - they seem to be too white and should be a woodeny colour so I'm experimenting with wood stains. Walnut seems to be a good choice... For the carronades the barrels are bronze but trunnion caps and eyelets will be black... I won't be posting again before Christmas so I take this opportunity to wish Everyone festive Cheer and happy building in 2016... Regards JohnP John Passmore attached the following image(s):

Hi Everyone - compliments of the season to All December 2015 progress is posted below, together with pictures. Working through issues 72 - 76 inclusive... * Assembled and fitted shields to lower starboard side gallery... * Assembled, painted and fitted the little cat cat to the rudder post... * Assembled and fitted the ladders to the upper Quarter deck... * Fitted closed gunport covers to Transom... * Painted the columns for both lower side galleries and lower transom, then profiled and painted the birch strips, before fitting all on the model... * Assembled and fitted shields to port side lower gallery... * Painted then fitted the Forecastle parapets and gunwales, All this went together remarkably well, considering the problems encountered with the forecastle deck elevations... * Painted and fitted lower side gallery decorations and finished forward corners of the Quarterdeck... * Painted and fitted quarterdeck gunwales before installing all the round gunport frames... * Painted all the wales strips gold then attached to both sides of the hull... * The last few pictures were taken outside as I dropped the old digital camera on the floor, taking a piece out of one corner of it...  So now the flash doesn't work very well... I've got one of those Iphone thingies that takes photos but I'm still trying to work out how to use it - Ho-Hum...
