Thanks lads much appreciated Whilst doing the stern I've been working on the barge, bit here bit there, so here`s an update on the progress, at the mo putting in the oar hole supports, I do these one at a time and let them dry before I cut them down and sand, this method is slow but gives you more control over the positioning of these tiny bliters willz attached the following image(s):

Cheers for the comments lads,. OK jumped onto the sterns coat of arms (seem to be doing a lot of hopping about at the moment) must say I'm not happy with it at this stage, thought it would be easier the second time round, the problem lies in the smaller scale? although its not that much smaller it is certainly pushing the limits of my experience, I'm happy with the prince of Whales feathers which is the main eye catcher so if I can get the rest of it to a reasonable quality it will have to do, anyhow heres a pic and as you can see still lots of work to do willz attached the following image(s):

Thanks for the comments lads, much appreciated. OK , the tools I use for carving, first of all I would like to point out that I am a complete novice at carving and my original over scale Victory stern emblem was the first thing I ever carved, so over the next day or so I will print a tutorial on how I tackled the dagger that is to the left of the prince of Whales feathers, and for now heres a pic of the tools I will use in that process willz attached the following image(s):

WOW Willz, If you're a complete novice, you should take it up professionally, just think what you could do at a larger scale. As for the tools, I expected something more elaborate, and you even had time to clean your teeth Great stuff. Regards Alan England expects that every man will do his duty.

OK lads on with the tutorial. First I drew the dagger where it lives on the piece, no need to be flamboyant just a rough sketch, then very lightly I go round it with an ordinary stanley blade slightly oversize, this is done very lightly and repeated till I get the depth required, only put slight pressure on the blade. The next stage still with the stanley blade I scrape away the material from the corners outwards willz attached the following image(s):

The next process is to get the shape a little nearer, the finger guard on this dagger has a snake like curve (just to make it easier) so to achieve this I first cut a z shape using a safety razor these are thinner and sharper than stanley blades, so less chance of the finger guard splitting and popping off, never the less you still have to nibble it out a bit at a time willz attached the following image(s):
