BUILD UPDATE #36
Hi everyone. My next 4 issues arrived this week (#36,#37,#38 and #39). They consist of 3 bundles of wooden planks, 1 bundle in each issue and a sheet with the floor panels in #39. I couldn't wait to get started on the job of covering those frames, and in doing so, I ended up doing all the planking on 3 separate days with the exception of the bow area in issue #38. This was because the parts for the torpedo room modification need to be worked on from both sides. Therefore, the planking around the bow won't happen until after the torpedo room interior is fully fitted. This is again being held up because I still need to purchase 2 or 3 more parts from Marinemodelwerks before I can proceed with that part of the build. I have also decided to add some lighting to the interior compartments but am still doing research on that before committing myself, but I'm leaning strongly towards LED's rather than fibre optic if nothing else than because of the rather tight turns involved in some areas, and I feel that LED's would give a better light output. To that end, I found some plastic tubing with an internal diameter of 8 mm (a leftover from my home brewing days ) and ran it between the base of the keel midsection and the midsection planking (issue #30) which the deck sits on after drilling a hole in those respective parts. With my electrician's hat on, I've decided to go for a system rather like a house lighting circuit where the cable is run horizontally and drops through the ceiling at each light point. That's just an analogy of course. Hence, on my build the wiring will run horizontally across the part of the model where the deck will eventually sit, and drop through into each compartment. It's still a work in progress, but I'll probably have 2 warm white in each compartment and an additional red one in the control room compartment. So, that's where I am at the moment. Thanks for all the positive comments and for looking in. See you next time Happy building David daffy09 attached the following image(s):

Hi David, looking good. We seem to be on the same wavelength but going slightly different routes. I am running 3 4mm tubes - one into each compartment. I started planking and running the tubes today and will post updates tomorrow. Keep up the good work. Graeme

BUILD UPDATE #37
Hi again. Here's some more pictures of the continuation of the cladding of the hull with the wooden strips. Everything seems to be going smoothly, but I'm a tad concerned about how the planks are marrying up with the plastic cladding in a very uneven fashion. In some places the depth is so great that even when the second layer of wooden strips goes on they will only just lay level with the plastic cladding, and may even need filling to bring them level with the plastic parts. In other places, the strips are already level with the plastic, so the 2nd layer will leave them extremely proud and an awful lot of sanding is going to be required for an even finish. Anyway, onward and upward. See you next time, thanks for the comments and for looking in. Happy building Daviddaffy09 attached the following image(s):

BUILD UPDATE #38Thanks for the encouraging comments Ian and Steve. here's a few more pictures of the work so far. The instructions in issue #38 cover the planking of the bow section, but I am omitting all of the planking in that area until the torpedo room modification is finished. Thanks again for the comments and thanks for looking in. Happy building Daviddaffy09 attached the following image(s):

I know Graeme, I didn't intend to do most of the planking all at once, but when I got started, I was enjoying the process lots and one plank led another and so on. I didn't realise how far I'd got with it. Still, I've gone back neutral gear again now and taken a break. I've been pretty impressed with your progress so far on test fitting the parts for the torpedo room - they set the model off a treat. Happy building David

BUILD UPDATE #39
Hi again, Issue #39 came with a sheet containing 2 floor panels and 4 strips of 1.5x10x240mm which will be used at a later stage. The first job was to cut away the frames in the control room cutaway section and those in the machine room cutaway section. This was accomplished initially by using a pair of side-cutting pliers, followed by use of my micro saw and Amati contour sanding tool which came into its own for this job which was a little fiddly in places. After these sections were cut out and smoothed, the large floor panel was cut from its sheet, cleaned up and test fitted to the space in the control room. It wasn't as good a fit as expected and some work was required to make it sit correctly, but my over enthusiasm with a file meant that some filling up will be necessary at a later stage. It was glued into place and set aside to dry. After seeing Graeme's (Pemberg) trial fit of parts for his torpedo room conversion, I gave into temptation and although I still need 2 or 3 more parts, I went ahead and cut out the relevant frames from the bow and test-fitted all the parts I did have. I also modified the piece of plastic cladding and tried that in place as well. I am very pleased with the result, and I'm now more than ever certain it will make a fine addition to this build, and still can't work out why Hachette omitted to include such an integral part of the U-96 in their model. It was, after all, the torpedo room which gave the submarine it's main purpose. Anyway that's it for now and since I went overboard with the planking, I have left myself with no more work on her for another 2 or 3 weeks when my next consignment of parts arrives. Thanks for the comments and thanks for looking in. Happy building David daffy09 attached the following image(s):

Looks fantastic David, did you have to trim the torpedo room floor panels down a touch or were they ok? Graeme

Hi Graeme. Yes, I had do quite a bit of trimming to get those floor panels to fit, particularly the lower one which I had to shave a good 3mm off it's height to get the panels to line up with the horizontal rebates in the rear bulkhead. At the front end I had to shape it to fit into the space between the plastic mouldings. I think the upper deck panel will need some careful shaping all the way along it's length to match the contours of the hull. Also had to do some filing down on the 2 front frames to make the little square section of the wall fit in without buckling. Happy building David

Thanks for the words of encouragement Andy, it is fun and the challenge is really enjoyable. Probably the biggest challenge will be the painting of those small parts. I'm also playing with the idea of finding someone with a 3D printer who could run me off some 1/48 scale crew figures, (the ones I've seen don't really look up to much). If I could realise that possibility, I'd like to have a crew/torpedo loading diorama in the enhancement although I think maybe that might be a little ambitious for my present skills Happy building David

Thanks Walter, and glad to see you back at work on your build. Hope you don't have any more delays like that last one. If there was a medal awarded for patience, you would certainly have earned it by waiting so long for your parts. Happy building David
